After last weeks meeting I was casually speaking with David Stone and he said that he was really pleased that the club is in great spirits and obviously doing lots in the community with projects etc. To have this voiced it really enhances my view that as a group we are working as a group to make a difference in our community and internationally as well. You should all be congratulated to be recognised for these efforts.
Last Thursday we had an initial discussion in regards to attending our District Conference in Napier on the 10th – 12th May. Michelle Forman will be the organiser for our club as we hope to have a number of our team go to this event. Please register asap and then we can keep track as to who is going to attend. Sometimes we forget to celebrate our successes and this is a great chance to have a weekend away, have fun, and enjoy a lot of fun along the way.
Another stimulating meeting well attended by 36 members and three guests.
First-up was Frances with her informative Snap Chat. Frances shared with us details of her career which commenced with a four year Nursing stint - a job she loved although the shift work was challenging. She then heard about an opportunity to sell Drugs, Pharmaceutical ones that is. Another stimulating opportunity which ended after a 5 years was a regional role based in Hong Kong. Being a passionate New Zealander, and missing friends and family, she decided to head home and look for a new opportunity which she found in the form of CEO of Cure Kids. Not long after joining Cure Kids she met with our Beryl R. and as they say - the rest is history. Although a demanding role, there are huge successes and of course Red Nose Day is one of the many which is taking up most of her time right now.
Next we heard from Dennis Millard from Auckland East Rotary. Dennis is also the District coordinator for the ERK's and Dennis was very keen to thank St Johns personally for the huge effort made by our Club, and superbly coordinated by Penny, in the recent round of preparing the Kits. Well done all!
Before our guest speaker was introduced President Allan updated the meeting on outcomes from last weeks Board Meeting and he took this opportunity to highlight just how active the club has been, and will remain so, for the remainder of the year. Please ensure you read on to see more detail on what's planned and how you can be involved.
Our guest speaker Honorary Member David Stone (accompanied by his son Lucas), needed no introduction when he came to share an update with us on what's happening in the various Regional Parks and Sanctuaries, namely, Tawharanui, Hauturu (Little Barrier Island) and Omaha Shorebird Sanctuary, of which David is a Trustee. The Hauturu Story was very well presented to us via Video and this can be easily accessed and viewed on You Tube or the Trusts Website; www.littlebarrierisland.org.nz.
Davids message was; get out and enjoy what we as New Zealanders are privileged to have access to at our doorstep, and do anything you can at home or in the conservation estate you can and involve family of all generations. Read on for a potential once in a lifetime opportunity for St Johns Rotary Members!!
Club visit to Hauturu / Little Barrier Island - for a unique and special day trip??
Further to the inspirational message from David and Lucas Stone last meeting, David mentioned the possibility of Club members arranging a Day Trip to this most special of NZ's conservation Island. Visits to the Island are only possible with the approval of Dept. Conservation, following receipt of a detailed permit application form. IPP Peter Buchanan. has had the pleasure of visiting the Island twice and he can personally vouch for the privilege of visiting Hauturu and seeing NZ as it once was.
Peter has the permit application form in hand. If you are interested in being part of such a visit (Weekend Day), to Hauturu, please let Peter know. Peter does not yet know the full cost, except that individually we would need to pay a quarantine fee of $44.16, and a yet-to-be-advised fee for the boat, plus collectively $149.50 as a permit landing fee. The quarantine restrictions are strict!! Date yet to be discussed. If there are at least 10 people interested, Peter will proceed to gather further information including all costs.
Note: Peter has also advised that individuals might also like to consider becoming a Supporter of Hauturu - for just $25 p.a. (or $20 for seniors). Supporters are able to apply in a ballot to visit the island for a "working weekend" (privileged assistance with the island's operations, and lots of enjoyment and great experiences).
Breakfast Meeting with Guest Speaker being Karla Paotonu - Outward Bound.
Karla has been a professional fundraiser for 11 years working in international and community development. Karla feels that being a fundraiser for Outward Bound is a privilege because it is the link between generous people who want to make a difference and the great work being done to change lives for the better. Karla is going to share with you details of "Project Refresh Anakiwa", the largest capital project Outward Bound has undertaken in 30 years, and the OB Schools Programme, a nationwide initiative to give young people from low decile schools the opportunity to attend a course and take what they learn back to their community and be an inspiration for others.

" INTERACT" Interact, the Rotary youth program, was launched by the RI Board of Directors in 1962. The first Interact club was established by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida. Interact clubs provide opportunities for boys and girls of secondary school age to work together in a world fellowship of service and international understanding. The term, Interact, is derived from "inter" for international, and "act" for action. Every Interact club must be sponsored and supervised by a Rotary club and must plan annual projects of service to its school, community and in the world. Today there are over 7,200 Interact clubs with more than 155,000 members in 88 countries. "Interactors" develop skills in leadership and attain practical experience in conducting service projects, thereby learning the satisfaction that comes from serving others. A major goal of Interact is to provide opportunities for young people to create greater understanding and goodwill with youth throughout the world.
Did you join Rotary to do good things in the community?
You can help or join in all projects (whatever the committee), just contact the committee director and/or project team leader. In most cases, you can include family and friends.
