President's Message
What a privilege it was to host Prof. Ed Gane at our meeting last Thursday, and to learn of his ground-breaking clinical trial research that has set on track the global eradication of Hepatitis C within the next 30 years. No wonder he was awarded NZ Innovator of the Year in 2017.  And it was also a special meeting to welcome Cheri Joliffe as a new member.

Of course, this Thursday is extra special for a different reason, being an entertaining Change-Over evening at which we welcome Allan Smith as our new President, and meet his Board of Directors.  Together Allan and his team will lead development of our club for the next 12 months, inviting our collective support by way of regular participation at meetings and in community activities - to make our club "tick" and to serve our wider community.

I've been grateful for the privilege of being president over the past 12 months - a role that gives new and challenging (ie. stretch) opportunities, and the chance to work more closely alongside so many talented and committed people. In my unscheduled 2 months' leave of absence, I was particularly thankful for the support I received from all Directors and other members who stood in for me, and provided encouragement. Under Allan's leadership I look forward to an exciting year in which we will be encouraged to "Be The Inspiration" for positive change.

Fundraising Going Strong at St John's
Treasurer Alex Gatt was very happy to announce our ANZAC Breakfast raised $434. He cheerfully handed over a cheque to club member Andy Francis who, as our Auckland RSA representative, was delighted to receive these funds. An excellent fundraiser, thanks to chief organiser Michele Mann.

Gary Key was also keen to advise members that thanks to their generosity, this year's Foundation donations have come in at just under $7,000. Well done St John's membership.  Challenge is "on" to continue these great efforts into the next Rotary year.
New Member Induction - Cheri Joliffe
What better way to complete your Presidential year than with a new member induction!

President Peter was delighted to induct and welcome Cheri Joliffe.  Cheri advised she has a strong interest in the Environment and is looking forward to getting "stuck in" on upcoming projects.

ERKS Packing
Penny advised via email that ERKs organisers were delighted with the help they received last week (despite late notice). Thanks Murray and Gavin who were able to assist mid week. ERKS organisers advise they would be grateful for additional help this coming Tuesday and Wednesday; and also Tuesday-Wednesday next week.

Advances in Hepatitis C Cure
Members enjoyed a treat last week with Professor Ed Gane presenting the amazing news to us that almost everyone with Hepatitis C can now be cured! In fact, he and his global team are on track toward total eradication of this disease within the next 30 years!

We learned an estimated 80 million people live with Hepatitis C and this disease is one of the silent global epidemics of the 21st Century causing one million deaths a year.

Dr Gane then explained to us how over a number of years he had supervised drug trials on Kiwi volunteers with chronic Hepatitis C. The trials have resulted in the development of new drugs, which once administered, need only a short course of tablets to CURE the disease.

RYLA - Driver's Please
Tom Street advises that our Club will have (potentially) up to 11 candidates attending RYLA this year. So, well done everyone who pushed and prodded applicants to apply for this great programme. Tom's and his team of RYLA interviewers were kept very busy!

Tom would like up to six (6) volunteers to help transport our RYLA participants out to Willow Park, from either their homes in Auckland or a designated meeting point. Our participants (including their gear) need to be at Willow Park Christian Camp (Eastern Beach) before 7.30am on Saturday 30 June. We also need six (6) volunteers to collect them a week later . Keep in mind you need to allow room for the adult participant and a large tramping/gear pack.

Please email Tom if you are able to assist as a Transporter.

Multiple Sclerosis Society Auckland 2018 Street Appeal
Hi there Alex
My name is Charlotte Hoonhout, I've been brought in as an events assistant for this year's Multiple Sclerosis Society Street Appeal. I am reaching out to you to inquire about your interest in and availability to support us again this year as your Rotary has in the past. The 2018 Street Appeal will be on Friday, September 7th and Saturday, September 8th. We are still in the process acquiring sites for this year's appeal, but we are open and excited to hear any ideas that you may like to share with us or friends you would like to bring along to make this 2018 appeal the best yet! As you know, the street appeal raises valuable funds to facilitate multiple sclerosis research, education and support initiatives. But this would all be impossible without your support as volunteers to champion the appeal. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards, Charlotte
Anyone interested in volunteering to assist with this street appeal - please feel free to email Charlotte at: streetappealv1@gmail.com
