The President's Pen

Good Evening Everyone

Thank you for helping to make my last official meeting as your President so enjoyable! It was just lovely to be part of the Young Totara Award presentation, as you must be aware by now, encouraging Youth is one of my passions.

As a Club, I think we have enjoyed lots of highlights this past Rotary year, and I would like to suggest that even being in lockdown became a bit of a Club highlight – causing a super quick launch into meeting via Zoom and proving we could be very successful at this for 12 mind-boggling weeks.

I simply could not have managed our year of ‘Small Acts – Big Impact’ without a great team of Directors and support crew. I look forward to thanking you all at our Changeover Celebration on Friday evening, and I know Hugh and his team are looking forward to his year of ‘Supporting our Champions’.

See you on Friday evening – don’t forget to come dressed as a Champion!

Warm Regards
Robyn

Meeting in Review - June 18th 2020
This meeting was the last meeting of President Robyn's year as we rapidly approach Change-over this week.  There were 36 in attendance, made up of;

29 Members (27 physically, 2 via Zoom)
1 Honorary Member (via Zoom)
4 Guests in person
2 Guests (via Zoom)

Our guest speaker was Molly Hillman, daughter of very proud member, Mark.  Molly was invited along, primarily to receive the Young Totara Award, and in attendance to assist President Robyn present the award, was none other than DG Gary Langford.  Gary congratulated Molly and presented her with a certificate and a small Totara seedling - he also reminded her to be very careful where she planted it, as Totara's can grow into very big trees!!

Apart from being present to receive the award, Molly also took the opportunity to update the club on "Second Step", the charity instigated by her when she was only 15.  Molly decided that she wanted to help the community by making sure that every child in her area had a warm well-made pair of shoes to attend school in.

"Second Step" recognized the fact that children's feet grow very quickly and families have to keep buying shoes.  Many families are unable to afford a new pair of shoes for their child and Molly determined that a simple connection between people who have spare shoes, with children and families who could make use of them.  It is a simple relationship made through "Second Step".

The organization started off with a small number of local schools and donors, but the ultimate goal is to take it regionally, then nationally, providing a donor service to children all over New Zealand.  The future can also be extended to infant shoes and sports shoes, both of which are in equal demand.  Soliciting sponsors for the likes of shoe polish and laces is also a role Molly has and she acknowledged that Mum ans Dad have supported her in this regard!  So if your shoes need a good polish Mark's your man!

Please click on "Read More" to see the definition pertaining to a Young Totara Award and it is easy to see why Molly was nominated and selected as a recipient, a first for District 9920.  Congratulations Molly, we are all very proud of you and wish you every success with the expansion of Second Step.

Sergeant Miles ended the meeting with another successful and entertaining Sergeants session.
