President's Message

Our last meeting was an engaging “triple celebration” – with Lilyann Huang presented with the Sir Peter McKenzie Award as the top Accountancy student at Glendowie College; Claire Lucas joining us as a new member; and two Rotary Exchange students Malena (from Argentina) and Vicky (from Austria) presenting about their home country and their experiences while living with Rotary host families in NZ.

Many of you will have contributed to the very worthwhile clean-up of Omaru Creek in Maybury Reserve last Saturday, organised by Nick Goddard? The clean-up will in turn contribute to the water quality assessment project that David Stone (Honorary Member) has championed. Omaru Creek is the location for Interact students at Glendowie College to monitor water quality over successive months to years. Photos below show the students on their inaugural visit to the site earlier in November.

Don’t miss this week’s Rotary meeting. Our member Chris Herlihy, Principal of Glen Taylor School, has recently returned from a trip to China to observe the Chinese education system. It will be fascinating to have such a personal insight into current directions in student learning in China.

Kind regards,

Peter Buchanan (standing in for Allan, in USA)

Stories
Maybury Clean-Up aka St Johns meets St John
We had an extremely eventful clean-up at Maybury Reserve Glen Innes on Saturday. It was a lovely sunny morning as we set to work bagging rubbish and pulling no less than four shopping trolleys from the stream, along with filling over ten large rubbish bags - all within the first hour!

The event then became somewhat "ex-stream" thanks to Dr Ben's enthusiastic wrench on a submerged wheelie bin which resulted in a shoulder dislocation for him (quickly and proficiently self-diagnosed!) Due to Ben's precarious position in the stream bed, the fire brigade had to be called to lift him to safety as gently as possible. We then enjoyed much fellowship while keeping Ben company as we awaited the arrival of a St John motorcycle ambulance to assist with pain relief and decide if on-the-spot realignment might be appropriate. Some time later a deluxe ambulance also arrived to transport Ben in style to Auckland Hospital.

Thanks to Ben, we were all (um) entertained by the humour of Spot (yes that was his nickname) the St John's First Responder with his allusion to friendly drug dealing, of which Ben benefitted fully. We also met our local firemen (six of them); and the deluxe Ambulance crew of two. Such a cool way to engage with our community! We are relieved to report that Ben's shoulder was realigned at the hospital and he then went home to work on recovery. We hope to have more photos of the great clean-up crew and the rubbish ready for next weeks Bulletin.

But wait - there's more! Shortly after most of us had left the area - Toni unexpectedly arrived with her reportedly delicious (if we could only get to sample them) morning tea muffins! Toni (also slinged-up from a shoulder dislocation last Monday night) had managed to bake for the occasion - despite having only one arm in action. Thankfully, a couple of the clean-up team and Spot the First Responder were till insitu to enjoy Toni's moreish muffins.

Thanks everyone for turning up and we all extend special "heal fast" wishes to Ben and Toni.
Guest Speakers - RYE Students
Club members were entertained last week with informative and competent presentations from two District 9920 Rotary Youth Exchange students. First up to speak was Victoria (Viki) from Austria, resplendent in her national dress and RYE blazer. Blazers get covered with pins and small mementos from their experiences and travels around our country. Viki has only been in NZ for three months, so her ability to present so well in English was awesome. She has attended Pakuranga College and is hosted by Pakuranga Club. (Pictured right).

Malena from Argentina spoke next (pictured left). She has been in NZ for 10 months and attended Onehunga High School. Malena has been hosted by Parnell Rotary Club and as you can tell from her momento-laden RYE blazer - her year in NZ is coming to an end.

We learned about their countries and their home towns, the food they enjoy, their schools, their families and friends. Both RYE students report having a super time in NZ with their host families and hosting clubs. They were also very very excited about their upcoming South Island trip (with aprox 25 other RYE's) which was due to depart on Saturday. Thank you for getting up early to make such lovely presentations - and thanks to host dad Colin (from Parnell Club) for bringing them to us.

Our club is very much looking forward to hosting from mid-January next year when Gonzalo from Argentina arrives!
Interact Freshwater Project
Alison and Jess from Glendowie College Interact Club beginning to learn about water quality assessment from Ruby (Auckland Museum) and Shaun (Freshwater Foundation) at Omaru Creek, Maybury Reserve, Glen Innes. With funds that included Sylvia Park Gift-Wrapping revenue, the Interact Club has purchased a sophisticated SHMAK water quality assessment kit from NIWA.
Motorbike Show - Volunteers Still Appreciated

Our Club has been given the great opportunity to earn a quick $5K (yes, five thousand) simply by assisting Papakura Rotary Club with their annual and extremely popular motorcycle show. They are looking for around 10 (ten) Rotary helpers at the ASB Showgrounds on Saturday 24 & on Sunday 25 November.

They need us to man doors, guide parking and man a Rotary booth.  Shifts would probably be four hours. Could members who can help please email Robyn ASAP who will coordinate a schedule. Email: Robyn.ingram@outlook.com

Quiz Night - Tickets still for Sale
We would really like to sell seven more tables of 10.

Please consider asking family and friends to come along. No need to buy an entire table. We are very happy to mix and match individual ticket sales and assign you to a table. Quiz night info is on the flyer below.
