We had an extremely eventful clean-up at Maybury Reserve Glen Innes on Saturday. It was a lovely sunny morning as we set to work bagging rubbish and pulling no less than four shopping trolleys from the stream, along with filling over ten large rubbish bags - all within the first hour! The event then became somewhat "ex-stream" thanks to Dr Ben's enthusiastic wrench on a submerged wheelie bin which resulted in a shoulder dislocation for him (quickly and proficiently self-diagnosed!) Due to Ben's precarious position in the stream bed, the fire brigade had to be called to lift him to safety as gently as possible. We then enjoyed much fellowship while keeping Ben company as we awaited the arrival of a St John motorcycle ambulance to assist with pain relief and decide if on-the-spot realignment might be appropriate. Some time later a deluxe ambulance also arrived to transport Ben in style to Auckland Hospital. Thanks to Ben, we were all (um) entertained by the humour of Spot (yes that was his nickname) the St John's First Responder with his allusion to friendly drug dealing, of which Ben benefitted fully. We also met our local firemen (six of them); and the deluxe Ambulance crew of two. Such a cool way to engage with our community! We are relieved to report that Ben's shoulder was realigned at the hospital and he then went home to work on recovery. We hope to have more photos of the great clean-up crew and the rubbish ready for next weeks Bulletin. But wait - there's more! Shortly after most of us had left the area - Toni unexpectedly arrived with her reportedly delicious (if we could only get to sample them) morning tea muffins! Toni (also slinged-up from a shoulder dislocation last Monday night) had managed to bake for the occasion - despite having only one arm in action. Thankfully, a couple of the clean-up team and Spot the First Responder were till insitu to enjoy Toni's moreish muffins. Thanks everyone for turning up and we all extend special "heal fast" wishes to Ben and Toni. |
