The President's Pen

Sunday 5 July 2020.

Hi Champions – we have successfully delivered our first project of the year!

Via our contacts at the Glen Innes CAB we received a request last Wednesday for two families who needed some support. In less than 24 hours our club and Dove Hospice managed to pull together a significant package of new and pre-loved items that would make Thursday night a little more comfortable for these families.

Just WOW – congratulations to all involved.

It would not be a new year without setting ourselves some challenges. I outlined my personal Rotary goals on Thursday, primarily to have fun and keep a sense of humour. I would like to challenge our membership to the following:
  • Attend at least two meetings a month
  • Reach out to those you have not seen in a while
  • Participate/contribute to a fundraiser
  • Participate in or champion two projects per year
  • Have fun doing some good
It will be great to reflect on our successes this time next year.

Take care and see you all on Thursday.

Meeting In Review - July 2nd 2020
July 2nd saw our new President, Hugh Scott-Russell pick up the reigns from now IPP, Robyn Ingram.

Hugh was welcomed to the podium by Sergeant for the day Murray H and President Hugh thanked the 26 members and 1 guest for bracing the first really cold morning of the year.

One of Hugh's first announcements of the day was to introduce our new club photographer, Kevin K, and thank him for taking on this important role.  The Bulletin Editor also welcomed the appointment and again a big thanks to Aubrey for his photography duties over the last few years.

Kevin immediately started pointing and clicking, capturing President Hugh deep in thought, thinking "what do I do next, or should I just ring the bell", and a good shot of Murray pretending he was holding the microphone.  You can see more photos from the meeting by clicking on "Read More", below.

Hugh used this meeting to share more details of his personal goals and goals for members to attain during the year ahead.  Goals set for members are outlined in Hugh's comments above.  His personal goals are;
  • Balance the budget
  • Create transparency
  • Engage with my community
  • Facilitate great fellowship
  • Survive and have fun
The theme for the year that Hugh has chosen is "Champions" and Hugh's definition is; "Champions are people in our club or community who are passionate about our community and need the framework to support their initiatives”.

As reported in last weeks Bulletin, a team of nine form St. Johns Rotary spent the 24th of June on Motutapu Island participating in a working bee in the island's nursery and Peter B was given the opportunity to provide further details on the work undertaken.  Thanks again to the nine worker bee's.

Unfortunately due to a prior commitment, Gary K was unable to attend our Change-over dinner, at which he was thanked by IPP Robyn for his work as Director Foundation and by President Hugh for once again leading this important area of the club again this year.  Well done and thanks Gary, or Gorgeous Gary as he is known by some.

Rotary Club of St Johns to the Rescue
Thank you everyone – we had an awesome response to our SOS email requesting specific donations for two Glen Innes families in dire need.

To recap, CAB Glen Innes Manager contacted us last Wednesday afternoon requesting immediate help for two families needing blankets, clothing and baby equipment. We moved into action on Wednesday evening with an all-member email via Clubrunner and received a super response from everyone.  Quick work, connections, communication and member generosity saw this result by Thursday 11:00am:
  • Delivery of a large pile of new and pre-loved blankets direct to CAB GI to pass along to the two families
  • Delivery of a porta-cot to CAB GI to pass along
  • Sergeant’s session at meeting collected $314 CASH which a member will use to buy new items for the two families (e.g. underwear, socks, warm vests)
  • A further $500 was donated by a member to purchase additional appropriate new items (via CAB/client liaison)
  • Dove Hospice Glen Innes/St Heliers made contact, with the intention to put together a box of clothing, shoes, toys and bits and pieces for each child and adult in the two families
  • We have now connected Dove Hospice Manager with CAB GI Manager to liaise direct for provision of proposed ‘box of helpfulness’ for each family member
  • Dove Hospice also offered transport to deliver their donations
Quite simply WOW.
Thank you everyone for your generosity and super speedy responses.

RCSJ - July Environmental Challenge
This challenge may seem like a simple request and indeed it is.  Look closely at the pictures below to see the impact on the environment - now's a good time to act - THANK YOU

Time for a Smile!
There were three little boys visiting their Grand Father

The oldest came out and asked his grandpa, “Can you make a sound like a frog, Grandpa?  Grandpa (being in a kind of ill mood) responds, “No, I don’t really want to make the sound of a frog now.”

So, the second little boy comes out and asks his grandfather,  “Will you please make a sound like a frog?” Grandpa again says, “No, not now. I don’t really want to do that.  I’m in a grumpy mood. Maybe later.”

Then the third little boy comes out and says, “Grandpa, oh please… Please, please will you make a sound like a frog?”

“Why do all of you boys want me to make a sound like a frog?” Grandpa asked.

The little boy replied with a hopeful face, “Well, Mum said that when you croak we get to go to Disney World!”

A man came to visit his grandparents, and he noticed his grandfather sitting on the porch, in the rocking chair,
wearing only a shirt, with nothing on from the waist down.

"Grandpa, what are you doing? Your weenie is out in the wind for everyone to see!" he exclaimed.

The old man looked off in the distance without answering .

"Grandpa, what are you doing sitting out here with nothing on below the waist?" he asked again.

The old man slowly looked at him and said "Well...last week I sat out here with no shirt on, and I got a stiff neck. This is your grandma's idea."

Have a wonderful week with many *smiles*.
