President's Message
On Thursday we saw 36 members who were excited to contribute to the direction of the club for this 2018 -19 Rotary year. There was certainly a buzz coming from the tables and the Directors feedback was really positive. I will look forward to sharing what the year plan looks like and the projects that will be committed to. Generating revenue is always an issue and in March 2019 we are still looking to run the Golf Day.  I am meeting with Freightways in the next few weeks to see if they will continue their support for this event.

We are NOT involved in the Sylvia Park Xmas present wrap although this did produce significant funds (approx. 26k) for our Club and Interact.  We will now need to look at how we seek these funds in a different way. Over the last year Rotary St Johns have put significant funds back to the community with our project support.

Each month after our Directors meeting I will be reporting back matters that may be of interest to you as a member. The Board meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month and so if you wish matters to be discussed it would be important to bring these to our attention by the previous Friday evening so that it could be included within the agenda.

Matters from the Board:

We were surprised that as a result of a review we found that only just over 50% of our members opened and read the bulletin. I know that I am preaching to the converted as you have opened this bulletin but ask all members when in discussion to encourage the engagement of “what is happening” via this great document. Peter and his helpers work hard each week to get this information to you.

Subscriptions for the 2018/19 year will not be increased and remain at $340 and payment will once again be invoiced on a quarterly basis as part of your monthly invoice. How are these funds spent??  See the pie chart below that will outline what these fees go towards.

Our banking system has had to be adjusted for this year due to the establishment of the Interact Club account and the need to manage international funds for the ONJA projects. Many thanks to Alex for working with Bruce to make this happen.

Brian is putting a lot of work into the weekly meetings with his team of helpers. This has been as a result of the feedback from the members workshop and some of these initiatives can be seen already.

For the meeting of the 2nd August we have Matt Billington presenting. This is a 19yr old who is inspiring many within our business world to make a difference so I encourage you all to be there alongside family and friends. We have also issued an invitation (15 invites) to the Board of Interact, RYPEN students, and the Tamaki College students to attend this function as our guests. Please register your attendance with Brian as soon as possible so that we can manage and cater for the numbers.
Kindest regards

Molly's Interview
Remember we recently had the pleasure of hearing from member Mark Hillman's daughter, Molly, talking about the charity project that she had instigated - called Second Step, (www.secondstepnz.org).  Well she was recently interviewed by Mike Hosking and despite a short time slot, 20 seconds into the interview Molly managed to get in a plug for St. Johns Rotary.   Checkout the following  link and many thanks Molly and great to hear the venture is going well.

Trees for Survival Tree Planting Project

Once again we are supporting Glendowie Primary Schools participation in the Trees For Survival project.  The School has arranged for their planting day to be Tuesday 7th August from 9.45 am to 2 pm at 581 Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd, Clevedon.  The School would love some volunteers and the children would enjoy having the interaction too.  A bus has been booked with departure from Glendowie Primary School at 9:00 am  if you’re wanting to attend, or you can make your own way there.

If interested in volunteering for this day please let Annie Tyson know by emailing her at annietyson@orcon.co.nz

Member Profiles
Over the last 6 weeks we have profiled our new Board and their Club Support teams.  From the positive feedback received, with Members cooperation, we are going to continue to profile Club Members.  This will allow us all to learn more about our great Club made up of great members.  This week we profile Michele Mann & Nigel Robinson.  Thanks to both for sharing their stories.
Member Profile - Michele Mann
I was born in Canberra, but proudly a Kiwi by choice since 1972.  Married to Eddie and have two dogs, Wizzo and Spike

I joined Rotary Club of St.Johns, May 6, 2006 and was inducted with Isabella Tedcastle.  The first Committee I joined was Community, and I am still there today..........

Became involved with Glen Taylor School reading program when approached by the school principal in 2007 and continue to support the school today where we have seen enormous progress.

I took over dictionaries in schools about 6 years ago and last year we did 98 dictionaries to low decile schools.

Was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2010 for services to the club and work on The Great Kiwi Anzac Day Breakfast.

Over the years Eddie and I hosted many social events at our Long Drive Home... yes even Wesley and Elyse's wedding.

After Eddie's serious dance with cancer in 2010 and the support through the 5 year journey from members, I value the fellowship aspect of our club very much.

My vision for the club is changing the lives of our community through harnessing and valuing each Rotary Club of St. Johns members' unique ability to contribute. To appreciate the value of altruism in our community.

Member Profile - Nigel Robinson
I left school at 14 to work on the family farm and at 19 years of age I went on my OE to England & Canada for two years.  On my return to New Zealand I worked as a Butcher before buying a butcher shop in Green Bay, Auckland in 1962.

Married Janet in Oct 1962 and have a grown-up family of three with 10 grandchildren.

After 12 years I changed my vocation and was Auckland Manager for two large Transport Co's. Six years at each.   Made redundant in 1986 I was virtually unemployable at age of 50 so became a Real Estate Business Broker.

About 3 years later Janet & I moved to Kohimarama when we bought the Miami Motel.  Worked hard in both the motel and as a Broker, {Top salesperson twice & second once in Auckland Real Estate Awards,} so that hard work really paid off.

Then got involved in the Motor Fuel Industry and with two sons we ran 5 gas stations.  Again changed direction around 2001 and after leaving gas stations, I got involved in Food Manufacturing with another food oriented family, finally selling my share in early 2018. I still do admin work for a couple of our landlord Coy's.

Over the years I have been very interested in Rugby and was a Referee for 20 years and for 12 of those years  I was was in top ten of 300 Auckland referees refereeing Senior games in Auckland.  Also did a lot of running to keep fit and have completed a couple of marathons and about 20-25 half marathons.  Nowadays it is walking and I still enjoy a reasonable fitness level.

In 2006/7 I had a great experience in training a Guide Dog puppy from 8 weeks old to about 20 months. When Carlin graduated as a Guide Dog he was matched with a man in Christchurch and after 10 years Carlin has just retired.  I am an active member of both Probus and the Tamaki Travel Club.  Travel is a major interest of both Janet and I and we have traveled extensively since 1980.  One of the highlights for me was the 2016 "Habitat for Humanity" build in Vietnam with a good number of St Johns members.

Our daughter Helen and son Paul were both AFS students in the USA and Germany respectively.  Janet and I became involved with that organisation and we have hosted 4 AFS students and 5 Rotary students in our home.

I  joined Three Kings Rotary Club in 1985 when living in Mt Roskill and when we moved to Kohi in 1988 I looked for a breakfast club to join and St Johns was the choice, about 4 months after it was chartered.  I have been Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant & Director 3 times and have been awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.  Daughter Helen Stephens is also a member of St Johns.  I still enjoy the great friendships made thru the St Johns Club and 34 years in Rotary.

Rotary Facts - Did you know?
rotary wheel

A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate “Civilization and Movement.” Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary Clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel, with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the “Rotary International Association.” A group of engineers advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a “keyway” in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.

Having read all above, it’s time for a smile
I went to the liquor store yesterday afternoon on my bicycle, bought a bottle of Rum and put it in the bicycle basket.

As I was about to leave, I thought to myself that if I fell off the bicycle, the bottle would break.  So I drank all the Rum before I cycled home.

It turned out to be a very good decision, because I fell off my bicycle seven times on the way home.
