President's Message
Last Thursday we enjoyed our end-of-year club meeting and Christmas Party, with tables kindly decorated by Robyn and Ainie. Food items contributed by members and Sunshine Fund donations for the Glen Innes Foodbank have been delivered by Penny and Toni. Entertainment for the evening was provided by harpist Sophie Garrett, Robyn’s niece.  Not only did Sophie play the harp with skill, she also explained its workings and how the harp is such an expensive, intricate, and ancient instrument. We were then transported to southern India with a presentation by Ainie, Gary, and Miles on their trip to help build two houses with Habitat for Humanity for under-privileged families near Bangalore, and Gary & Miles’s holiday following. See below for further details. Gary was also presented with his Yachting NZ Service Award, first presented during his absence in India.

While club meetings have concluded, club members are very much still active through until Christmas Eve – with Project Elf (gift wrapping) as a major fundraiser led by Ainie.  If not already, please add your name on the updated roster spreadsheet, which will be circulated again via email soon. Help was initially requested for supervision of Glendowie College students (who were to be doing all gift-wrapping), but student numbers have not kept up with demand – and Rotarians are needed to supplement students to wrap presents at 3 stations currently, and 4 from Sat. 16 Dec. Our commitment extends for all shopping hours at Sylvia Park till 24 Dec., so please consider what you, your family, and friends are able to offer.

I had the pleasure two meetings ago of announcing, in President-Elect Allan Smith’s absence, that Robyn Ingram has accepted Allan’s invitation to be our Club President from 1 July 2019 – 30 June 2020; ie. Robyn is our President Nominee. Congratulations Robyn!!

If I don’t see you at Sylvia Park, I extend best wishes for the Christmas season – and for a relaxing break with family and friends.

Christmas Dinner Meeting - 7 December
There was a great turnout of just under 60 (members and guests) for our final Christmas themed meeting this year. A fun occasion where many rose to the Christmas Hat challenge and arrived suitably adorned.  One member (pictured) took the theme a step further!

On arrival and throughout dinner we were entertained with stunning harp music performed by Sophie Garret (Elf-Robyn's niece). Sophie played beautifully and also gave us a brief 'Harp 101 info session'.

Members and guests thoroughly enjoyed a festive dinner menu with our meeting area beautifully decorated for the occasion with "sustainable" Christmas touches on every table.

President Peter was delighted to present Gary Key with a prestigious Service Award that he had accepted (on Gary's behalf) at the recent Volvo Yachting Excellence Awards at Westhaven's Royal NZ Yacht Squadron. Gary was the recipient of this award for his leading advocacy through our Club of the Yachting NZ's Volvo Sailing "Have a Go!" scheme. Next year, the "Have a Go!" scheme will engage students from 12 local low-decile schools. Gary's role was also acknowledged in the Club's Yachting Scholarship that annually assists two talented youth sailors to attend their class youth championships.

Following dinner (and a record breaking Sergeant's session raising money for Glen Innes Food Bank) our Habitat for Humanity Build team took the floor to report on their recent adventure.

A lovely evening enjoyed by all who attended and a super way to close off meetings for the year.  Well done Rotary Club of St Johns and Merry Christmas.  Click Read More to see more great photos from our Christmas evening.

Habitat for Humanity India Expedition
Gary, Miles and Ainie
WOW, what an amazing time Ainie, Gary, and Miles had in sharing their experiences from their recent Habitat for Humanity trip to southern India. A total of 14 keen Rotarians around New Zealand decided to embark on a Habitat for Humanity build. Gary was clearly gripped by the truly humbling experience where the group spent a week building two houses, in a village situated 2 hours south-west of Bangalore. Just to get there the Team undertook 16 hours of air travel and a one-hour bus trip arriving at 2:00am. Tourists don’t go to this village, so the 14 Rotarians were the first Europeans to visit this community.

Prior to commencing the build the Team stayed in what they thought was meant to be a salubrious hotel, Club Magnolia but re-named ‘expect the unexpected. It only had a total of 9 rooms and indeed most of the complex was still being built!! A nice touch for the team was the early morning Tai Chi, which was embraced by Ainie. Miles brother-in-law facilitated the opening ceremony and the females had touches of turmeric applied to their temples symbolising fertility. Ainie was flattered as she was assumed to be 25 and single!

It really was a culture shock with the people being the poor of the poorest. Gary talked about this one week of "service", and becoming for a short time, part of the village people’s lives. In their eyes the Rotarians were building them a palace. It was life changing - Gary reflected on how we live in a bubble and how much the experience was sobering and changed his life.

Project Elf  Going Strong
Project Elf (Gift Wrapping at Syliva Park) is now well underway. Those already involved can report: Elf duties are unexpectedly fun! Busy but not boring and the interaction with the public is an education!

As President Peter reports, due to a shortage of Interact/student gift-wrappers (for this first week), our Rotarian Elf-Supervision duties very quickly expanded to include actual GIFT WRAPPING! But of course St Johns Rotarian Elves have risen to the challenge and in true "Elf" style, rolled up their sleeves and happily got down to the ultra busy-business of wrapping with a vengeance.

Already there are boastful stories of who has wrapped the largest gift; or the most unusually shaped gift; or the most gifts for one customer. I am wrapped to report that Elves not already skilled in the minutiae of gift wrapping have caught on fast. Most of us have the 'tearing' of paper from dispensers down to an art and can now bunch-up those do-it-yourself bows just beautifully! We have also learned how to 'charm' donations out of scrooges who like to pretend the service is fee; and can even do the Rotary wRap (aka answering questions about Rotary) all at the same time as sizing-up, cutting, folding, taping and bowing those presents).

Best of all are the smiles and heartfelt Christmas wishes to-and-fro from customers who are full of thanks for the convenient "gift wrapping service" and are really very happy to donate not just coins but the paper stuff for the service!

We still have this weekend, next week and next weekend (inclusive Christmas Eve) before we can put up our belled-feet and relax with the eggnog.  So please, if you haven't joined-in on this fun project, have a look at the updated roster (click Read More to see updated version) and get in touch with Ainie to let her know if you can help for a few hours.
