I am really looking forward to our first fellowship meeting this Thursday. We had great feedback around this event last year so please join us for some Golf, Fish & Chips and possibly a bevvy of your choice.
I enjoyed the talk this past Thursday by Dr Bodo Lang, learning more about sugar and how making subtle changes in your choices will have huge impacts on your health. Reminds me of IPP Robyn’s slogan for last year – “Small Changes – Big Impacts”
David Hartstone needs some support and it is not with his swing – apparently that is pretty good. David has reached out to the club regarding sponsorship for The Golf Day. If anyone has some leads please let David know.
It was excellent to see a better turnout at our first Level 2 meeting this year. 27 members and 3 guests present.
President Hugh welcomed all and ran through a list of club notices prior to introducing our guests. Our first guest was Vinod Sareen. Vinod is our Assistant District Governor who is a member of the Sommerville Rotary Club and this was his first visit to our club. Apart from taking the opportunity to introduce himself to the club, he also took the opportunity to update us on where Rotary is at in regards to the "End Polio Now" campaign, and the District Polio fund raising project, "Tag On Tag Off". Standby to hear more about this project and how you will be able to participate.
Thanks again for taking the time to visit Vinod, and St Johns Rotary looks forward to working with you over the year ahead.
David Hartstone then updated us on where we are with next years St. Johns Rotary Golf Tournament. Unfortunately our principal sponsor, Freightways, have advised us that they will not be in a position to sponsor the tournament again next year. We thank Freightways for their past support and ask all members to contact David with the names of any businesses who they think may be interested in picking up the sponsorship of this very important fundraising event for our club.
Our next speaker on the day was Dr. Bodo Lang, (seated on Peter B's left), from the Department of Marketing at the University of Auckland. His subject was, "How Sweet It Is - Dr. Bo Knows Best".
Over the next 30 minutes all members very quietly listened to the good Dr. who shared with us a range of statistics and information on how much sugar many of us consume and how bad it is for us.
We are all well aware of this, but it was good to be reminded - some of the sound bites from his presentation were;
Sugar is known under 61 different names,
The maximum amount of sugars that should be consumed daily shouldn't exceed; Child - 3 teaspoons, adult female - 6 teaspoons and adult male - 9 teaspoons. (There are 4 grams of sugar in every teaspoon),
In New Zealand we each consume on average 37 teaspoons per day,
New Zealand ranks 3rd for obesity among 40 highest income countries,
In NZL, $686 million dollars is currently spent annually on health care for obesity, and this cost is climbing,
74% of all packaged foods contain added sugars,
Fruit Juices are a major contributor of sugar intake,
Some good news; 440 mls of beer contain only 0.8 teaspoons of sugar and 104 mls of Dry Red Wine contains zero sugar,
So what can we do to reduce our sugar intake?
Reduce juice consumption,
Increase intake of water, tea and coffee,
Avoid the likes of; muesli bars, flavoured yogurts, packaged cereals,
and the list goes on......
A very interesting presentation - thank you Dr. Bodo!
Our official photographer was once again circulating in the meeting room looking for candid shots. A couple of these appear below;
THURSDAY OCTOBER 1st - Dinner and Fellowship Evening at the Club!
This fellowship event will replace our weekly meeting and it is open to Members, Partners, Family & Friends. Come and have a go on the driving range at our home-base, Remuera Golf Club, followed by a delicious fish and chips meal at Winstones, or possibly better known as the 19th.
This is a fun event, and as observed last year, is suitable for all abilities, (or complete lack of ability). Those not wishing to swing a club are invited to observe the fun, or take the opportunity to have a catch-up chat in the bar.
An RSVP will be required, so please diary and RSVP to Robyn now. It has been a while since we had a good social event so the more the merrier.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 8th - Breakfast Meeting Venue - Remuera Golf Club - 7.00 am for 7.15 am.
Our Guest Speakers at this meeting will be Mavis Dunn & Barry Shaw from Orakei Toast Masters.
Toastmasters and Rotary recently announced a partnership to help members grow professionally and make a difference in their community. We have invited Mavis, (Area Director) and Barry, (Division Director) from Orakei Toastmasters to speak to us about their organisation and club activities.
Orakei Toastmasters offers a culturally-diverse, friendly and supportive environment to learn real communication and leadership skills. Their club currently has over 35 members from 15 different countries.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 15th - Breakfast Meeting. Venue - Remuera Golf Club. Time 7.00 am for 7.15 am.
Guest Speaker, Jan Barraclough;
Jan is a Senior Investment Advisor with Craig's Investment Partners. She enjoys speaking to those who have an interest in financial matters and who may appreciate a valuable Q&A opportunity. By this date the New Zealand Election will have, or should be decided, but the US Election outcome will still be unknown. This should be a very interesting talk.
Once again a small but highly efficient team from our club joined forces with members from the RC of Newmarket to pack food boxes and hygiene supplies ready for distribution from the Salvation Army Manukau depot.
The next opportunity to assist with this vital community service will be late October. We will advise details closer to the time. The following photos will give you an idea of the fun times our St. Johns members had!!
As many of you will know, we have a famous Fungi Expert in our Club. Mycologist, Dr. Peter Buchanan is that man, and today he featured on Afternoons with Jessie Mulligan on Radio New Zealand in a 25 minute segment titled "Expert Feature: The place of fungus in our lives", where Peter answered many questions from Jessie and listeners on the importance and the fascinating world of Fungi.
Peter even has his own pet fungi which he attracted when he was working in China. His wife and children are not quite as keen on these skin feeding fungi, but Peter certainly sounded very fond of them!! To hear more go to the Radio New Zealand Website and look for the segment with Peter which aired today, September 28th.
A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office. "Is it true," she wanted to know, "that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life? “Yes, I'm afraid so," the doctor told her. There was a moment of silence before the senior lady replied, "I'm wondering, then, just how serious is my condition because this prescription is marked 'NO REPEATS".
*********************** An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anesthesia, he asked to speak to his son. "Yes, Dad, what is it? "Don't be nervous, son! Do your best and just remember, if it doesn't go well, if something happens to me, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife...."
********************
The older we get the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. (Mostly because we forgot why we were waiting in line in the first place.)
******************** When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to school, think of Algebra.

Have a wonderful week with many *smiles*.
