President's Message

Is there ever a dull moment with Rotary Club of St Johns? We enjoyed another action-packed meeting last week. Sergeant Miles had returned safely from Thailand, Oscar and partner had flown in from the UK; we had special youth guests from Glendowie and Selwyn Colleges; and IPP Allan led us quickly through AGM business so we could then enjoy his report on the past year. Thank you, Allan for your dedication and commitment to the best Rotary Club in the District!  And if that wasn’t enough, Jennie (talking about the Rotary Foundation) was the follow-up speaker. All that and we still managed to finish at 8:30am-ish.

Looking forward to another informative breakfast meet this week featuring Harry from Auckland Waste Wise. This will be our last breakfast meeting for the year!

Don’t forget the following two weeks, instead of a Thursday meeting we have two Saturday EVENTs to look forward to! Saturday 7 December is our 30th Anniversary Celebration; Saturday 14 December is our Food Bank Collection at New World, with a final meeting/BBQ later in the day at 5:30pm.  Full details for our final EVENT/project/meet/BBQ will be emailed out soon.

Warm regards

November 21st - Meeting in Review
After returning from a three week absence, on a Habitat Build and tour of Thailand, Sargent Miles introduced President "Racey" Robyn to 27 members and 6 guests.

It was a very busy meeting, starting off with Genesis Kasper, an 18 year old student from Selwyn College, who was at the club to introduce herself and to thank the club for their financial support to assist her to join the crew on an upcoming sailing on the Spirit of Adventure.   This is a huge adventure for Genesis and we look forward to her returning to the club early next year to share details of her experience.

The support for Genesis' week on the Spirit of Adventure has been funded by the Brian Gibbs Memorial Scholarship.  To learn more about the Scholarship, please click on "Read More" below.

The next formality at the meeting was the presentation of the Peter McKenzie Memorial Scholarship to the top accounting student at Glendowie College.  The winner this year is Hollie Thomlinson and Glendowie College teacher Noelene Doherty had the following to say about Hollie;

"Hollie is an all-round student.  She has been involved in sports – cricket (for five years) and Lacrosse (for three years).  This year she was Captain of the Girls 1st XI Cricket team and she won the Ellis Cup for Leadership in Girls Cricket.  She also contributed to the school as a Peer Support Leader.  For the last three years she has been a member of Interact.  Hollie attained Excellence in Level 1 NCEA and has 41 out of the necessary 50 credits to attain Excellence at Level 3.  This year Hollie came first in Accounting.

In the picture above, Hollie is flanked by her mum on the left and Noeline Doherty on her right.

The Clubs AGM, was also scheduled to be included last Thursday, but we were still in for one more surprise, with member Oscar Lyons being re-introduced to the club.  Oscar, who was accompanied by his partner Amadea, took leave of absence from the club 3 years ago after being selected as a Rhode Scholar.   He is currently still living in the UK and running his own business, Leadership Development in the medical arena.

After a very busy start to the meeting proper, which included the AGM as covered in a separate story below, we then heard from our Guest Speaker on the day, PDG Jennie Herring.  Jennie is the Rotary Foundation District Chair and her talk was focused on the Rotary Foundation, some history, what it does and how to access the funds.

The Foundation is our charity of choice and was launched in 1916 with a fund of US$26.15.  Today, some 100 years later the Rotary Foundation has distributed in excess of US$3 billion on Humanitarian help worldwide.

All Rotary Clubs have the ability to apply for either District Grants or Global Grants from the Foundation, to assist with club projects.  To secure funds a formal application must be lodged and if approved, the project must demonstrate that it will be sustainable.  Our own ONJA Madagasgar project is a very good example of a sustainable project that has been successful in securing a Global Grant.

Gary Key is currently the Club Director Foundation and he is seen here thanking Jennie for her presentation.  If you have any questions regarding Foundation and how it may assist a project that you are working on or thinking about, don't hesitate to ask Gary.

AGM - 2018 / 2019
AGM:  Alex Gatt's apologies were tabled and accepted and in his absence, IPP Allan Smith stepped in to cover off the Annual Financials as well as his own Presidents Report for the year 2018 / 2019.

The highlights from the Balance Sheet was that Fund Raising in the year was up $10,000 year over year and despite income from Subscriptions being down, the club, (via the Trust), donated in excess of $179,000 to various community projects.

As there were no questions from the floor in relation to the Accounts - John Cornaga moved that the Accounts as distributed be accepted.  The motion was seconded by Hugh Scott-Russell and passed unanimously.

IPP Allan then proceeded to present the President's Report for the Rotary year 2018 / 2019.  Following the presentation of the report, Allan moved that the report be accepted, John Cornaga seconded the move and the report was subsequently accepted unanimously.

A copy of Alan's report is inserted below which can be viewed by clicking "Read More".

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 28th, BREAKFAST MEETING
GUEST SPEAKER HARRY RAINU:
Harry is the WasteWise Coordinator for the Waste Solutions Unit / Infrastructure and Environmental Services of Auckland Council.  He is responsible for the education and development of programmes encouraging Aucklander's to manage Waste differently.

This difficult issue touches everyone.  It signals change to a smaller or greater degree for every household, but these are changes that we, as Aucklanders, can make together because we know for sure that they are for the good of the city and for all of us.  This plan is about reducing the waste we throw into the bin, and about recycling and reusing more.  We know that many of the resources we depend on, which we have often taken for granted, are becoming scarce.  Yet there is so much we can do to ensure that resources we previously regarded as of no use – such as food / green waste and industrial waste – are fully used, and reused, reducing what we send to landfills.  We want to aim high but also make sure we take people with us.  In particular, the vulnerable must be protected and supported – that is why any changes will be made carefully over a period of four years.  All the actions that this plan will eventually require of us, are ones we would expect of a country that brands itself as clean and green, and of a city that aspires to be the world’s most liveable.

Hi Muriel,

Director RNZWCS Valda Cordes and I visited Tonga last week and during our hectic schedule we spent some hours at MTC.

We saw the installation and presented the certificate which is to be hung in their entrance.

We took a photo of the outside installation, but not he showers as they were in use at the time.

Also attached a copy of MTC carers Amanaki and Ofa.

The children have an improved quality of life thanks to the clubs donation.

Best wishes
Stuart

Please consider this request as urgent in the context of the ongoing catastrophe affecting so many in the Islands of District 9920.  I know this call comes following the one for the Australian Bush Fires however any help your Rotary Club or individual members can provide would be most appreciated.

The Four Way Test
Time for a Smile
A 10 year old girl asks her mum; “Mummy, how was I born? "

The mum smiled and replied:

“Once upon a time daddy and I decided to plant a wonderful little seed.
Daddy put it in the earth and I took care of it every day.
After a while the seed started to grow more and more leaves, and in a few months
it turned into a beautiful healthy plant.
So we took the plant, dried it, smoked it, and got so high that we had sex without a condom! “

Thank for the contribution Aubrey!

Have a wonderful week with many *smiles*. image
