Ingrid’s Rotary journey began with Rotaract, as a charter member of Henderson Rotaract, and then an attendee at RYLA when in her early twenties. Her reconnection with Rotary came as a charter member of the Rotary Club of Parnell in 1994, and she has since held several positions including President in 2005-06. She has also been an Assistant Governor and has held the positions of District Trainer and Rotary Leadership Institute Chair in District 9920 for the last five years.
Another very lively meeting with 32 members and 4 special guests in attendance.
Our guest speaker, Peter Boshier, Chief Ombudsman, is also an Honorary member of St Johns Rotary, and we were honoured to not only to have Peter present, but also two other Honorary Members present in the form of Alex McKenzie and David Stone. David was accompanied by his wife, Jill.
Peter is based in Wellington, where he and his staff of 100 provide independent monitoring to areas of the NZ community where there is unresolved conflict. He is responsible to New Zealand Parliament and he is free to act on a wide range of issues. Peter loves his job and is prepared to go public on matters where proper process is not being followed and standards are not being applied evenly. Recent examples of his work included the tazering of a goat by Police, double bunking in prisons, a crime of torture where a patient was suffering from dementia and was locked up for an extended period, without proper medical support. It was a great pleasure to have Peter back to talk to us and we thank him sincerely for giving us the time from his extremely busy schedule.
As per the story in last weeks Bulletin, a team of seven club members recently visited Motutapu. Below are further comments from IPP Peter B. with more photos of the day available by clicking "Read More" below.
An enthusiastic team from St Johns spent a productive Sunday on Motutapu Is., on 5 Aug. Our focus was helping at the foundation of the restoration effort – at the plant nursery where seedlings are raised to young trees for planting out, from seed collected mainly on the island.

The three pics below show, start of work in January 2018, half was through and the completed building!
I first Joined Rotary because of Mary Ann D. several years ago I can't remember which year but Bruce Hancock was the president then and it is the first time I have joined anything like this. I was impressed with the good humour of all the members and their caring attitude. The meetings are fun and interesting and well run. Everyone made an effort to welcome me as a member which is great.
I am single (actually divorced) with no kids and no family in NZ at the moment. I have a brother who travels away a lot and my mother recently passed away.
Now for something completely different. The email below may be of interest by some of the Club Members! Be sure to checkout the links embedded in this email for some great promotional video.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF A ROTARIAN As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs. In the early 1950s a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian may think on a global basis. Here is what it said: "A world-minded Rotarian: • looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace; • resists any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority; • seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands; • defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual so that he may enjoy freedom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from persecution, aggression, want and fear; • supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere; • upholds the principles of justice for mankind; • strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal; • urges and practices a spirit of understanding of every other man's beliefs as a step toward international goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life." That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions!
Did you join Rotary to do good things in the community?
You can help or join in all projects (whatever the committee), just contact the committee director and/or project team leader. In most cases, you can include family and friends.
