President's Message

The changing world of Rotary is seen quite openly with clubs changing meeting times, the style of a meeting, and how they structure the Board around projects vs. function.

This challenge is for our members to consider; what is it that you want from your Rotary Club should be considered very carefully.

Our membership is made up of all aspects of our community and each seek differing outcomes from their involvement.  However, the club just does not happen without the efforts of members. I would ask you consider the questions raised and ask yourself “how can I contribute”?  We are a very active club and our community responds so strongly to us in our given support.

We are heading into a new year and Robyn would be grateful to understand how you all can contribute to make the club work well for both the members and the community.

Kindest regards,
Allan

Stories
May 23rd Meeting
As was expected, we were indeed inspired by the presentation from six of the nine, St. Johns Rotary sponsored students, who attended this year RYPEN Camp in late March.

These talks continue to be a highlight of the Rotary year and this year was no exception, with all six students each relaying what a great experience the camp had been and it was made even better by the students not having access to their cell phones - a "first" for some!

RYPEN, (the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment), is a Youth Leadership camp for Year 12 and 13 students, aged between 14 - 17 years old, designed at developing young people’s potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure-based learning.

RYPEN is designed for students who are seen as the upcoming leaders in schools within our District who just need a bit of a push and a confidence boost to start achieving at their full potential.

RYPEN has as its principal aim, to communicate to young people taking part in the program a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards and allow them to broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically.
After listening to all six students it is apparent that we met our goals and a huge thank you goes to; Ainie, Tricia Gerrard, Mark Hillman, and  Kevin Kevany for their contribution to the planning and administration of the District led Camp.  This was complimented with support and assistance from Grant Matheson and George Wilson from the Rotary Club of Papakura, Hilary Prior from the Rotary Club of Downtown and the Rotaract Club of Auckland City and Rotaract Club of Auckland University together with past RYLArians.

The above picture shows the four of the six from Glendowie College and two of the three sponsored from Sacred Heart College, accompanied by teachers David and Nick.

Week Four, 20 – 24 May
A full week this week with four schools, kind weather and high tides.  That said we only ventured out of the confines of the Okahu Bay breakwater on one occasion because the weather really wasn’t too sure what it was doing and due to the busy ship, ferry and super yacht traffic on the harbour.

The lighter conditions made it easier to work through the programme, from anxious land kids being introduced to an (aptly named) Optimist through to being confident under a capsized boat in deep water.

Ruapotaka School was new to the programme and their kids on Monday and Tuesday were awestruck at the prospect of getting out on the Waitemata harbour.  Their blog on the school webpage gives an excellent review of one of their days, https://rpsglenish.blogspot.com/

Point England and Tamaki school kids on Wednesday and Thursday did some great sailing and swimming, with quite a few hot showers being the order of the day.

Friday saw the fourth class from Churchill Park School and they seemed all pre-primed and roaring to go.  As such it was surprising that only three were soaked before lunch as standing sailing, rubber duck retrieving and bow riding, (Titanic posing), were all on after only the first half hour of sailing.  After lunch one coach boat was on shuttle service taking the chilled back to the showers, while some ‘don’t feel the cold’ kids complained they had only capsized four times and it couldn’t be finish time.

Of the 117 sailors for the week about 20 had sailed before and around 40 never been in a boat before.  Once they take on board that they aren’t going to get hurt, eaten, or drown it is amazing how rapidly their confidence and skills develop.

The four-week total is now 440, so should top 500 next week!!

As you can imagine, we are receiving very positive feedback about the programme from the schools - this is just one example;

"Dear Gary,
On behalf of my students and my self I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to you and St John's Rotary for being one of the groups who enabled our sailing experience.  This was the first time for any of my class to do this and I was a little nervous about how they would manage on the water.  I need not have been.

The instructors were superb!  They were patient, very clear with instructions and happy to repeat them as often as was needed, which was quite a lot.  Not only that, they created an atmosphere of trust which is very important for these children in relation to adults that they encounter.  My students are still buzzing about what a good time they had and I have noticed a huge boost to their confidence around water and in trying new things.

Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity.
Cheers
Glenis Honore and Room 9 of Ruapotaka School"

RYE Selection Weekend
The beautiful weather made for a great RYE Selection Weekend (24-26 May) held at Kokako Lodge, Hunua. Over the weekend, Kiwi applicants for our Rotary Youth Exchange programme spend time with current Inbound RYE's, ROTEX (returned Kiwi RYE's) and the RYE District Committee. The idea is to interact and get to know the applicants, tell them and their parents more about the programme and after the weekend, make the 'final' selection.

Our five Inbounds (Argentina, Germany, Austria, Denmark, France) were all there and had the important and fun job of interacting with the six applicants to get some 'peer-intel' on whether they would measure up as potential RYEs. They also got to promote their home Country and try and entice applicants to make their Country first choice.  To start the weekend, the Inbounds and Outbound applicants had a high ropes challenge. It was great to see how quickly they assisted and encouraged each other - even though they had only met 20 minutes prior to the challenge.

The only downside of the weekend was that we didn't have more applicants. If you are aware of a great all-round student who is aged between 15-18 years (at January 2020); they are still eligible to make a late application for Exchange, departing January 2020. Contact Robyn for further info.
Gonzalo's Corner
Hi, this week was really good.  A normal school week but a different weekend.  This weekend I had the IYE selection weekend so I enjoyed it with Rotarians, Inbounds, Outbounds, and Rebounds.

It was a really nice to stay with them. We did some small hiking and other physical activities.
Time for a Smile
A Lexus  mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of an LS 460 when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop.  The cardiologist was waiting for the service manager to take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage,
"Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?"
A bit surprised, the doctor walked over to where the mechanic was working.
The mechanic straightened up and wiped his hands on a rag.
“So Doc, “ he said.  “Take a look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in. Now I’ve finished and it is working just like new.  So, how is it that I make $48,000 a year and you make $1.7M, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"
The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic, "Now try doing it while the engine's running.”
