Meeting in Review - February 11th 2021
President Hugh extended his apologies as he was having an eye operation on the day of our meeting.  However, we were very well looked after by IPP Robyn who stepped in to chair the meeting in Hugh's absence - it was just like old times.  Thanks Robyn and hopefully you are well on the mend Hugh and we will see you soon!

A small, but happy to be back group of 22 members and 2 guests where present for the first meeting of the year and all were keen to hear from our guest speaker, Lachlan Kerr.  As members will recall, Lachlan was St. Johns Rotary's sponsored RYE student, who headed off to Chile in January 2020 to begin the experience of his life.  Well he certainly did have an experience, although it was not quite what Rotary had planned or what Lachlan was expecting.

Covid19 had a huge impact on his exchange plans, but what an experience he had, despite!  He shared with us an insight into his time in Chile, his four months of Lockdown, his host families, his friends and his journey home and then around New Zealand as he completed his year.

Thanks to Lachlan's flexibility, maturity and his desire to make the most of his exchange, he still had a great experience and he has returned home a delightful, confident and an excellent Rotary Ambassador.

His next steps are still in the planning stage, but he is intending to enroll in University and initially study Law and Arts.  We all wish you well with the next phase of your life, Lachlan and we do hope that you stay in touch with us - we would love to hear - WHAT'S NEXT!

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 18th - "ZOOM MEETING" LINK: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83675768393?pwd=VFNCakgzZ2tMTU5EcXBhQkxzVzl6UT09
  - Speaker Troy Churton:

12 months ago, Troy finished 5.5 years as the National Manager - Retirement Villages, at the Commission for Financial Capability and he now holds a leadership team role with the Financial Services Council.  He will reflect on some of the potential "fish hooks" of Retirement villages.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 25th - Breakfast Meeting, Speaker Rhondda Middleton Salvation Army:

Since 1883, The Salvation Army has fought poverty and social and spiritual distress in New Zealand.  They have helped more than 120,000 families and individuals in need each year—with budgeting advice, food and clothing assistance, life skill programmes and other comfort and support.

Rotary in our District started to assist with foodbank packing and food parcel distribution (from the Manukau Centre) during the Covid Lockdown. Teams of Rotarians from different clubs (including ours) have kept up the volunteer work at their Manukau Food Bank on a regular basis.

Note:  The first opportunity this year, to help with food packaging will be held at the SA facility in Manukau on 23rd of February.  If you can assist with for a few hours, please contact IPP Robyn

THURSDAY MARCH 4th - Dinner Meeting - Speaker Simon Yates (LegaSea NZ):

After a successful career in sports marketing, sponsorship and advertising including 15 years with one of New Zealand’s most successful advertising agencies, DDB, Simon chose to leave the world of fast moving consumer goods promotions and dedicate his remaining years to follow his passion for meaningful environmental change. He joined LegaSea 8 years ago believing that this was the organisation most likely to campaign for and promote change in the way we are managing our fisheries and coastal ecosystems. Simon spearheaded much of their brand, sponsorship and communications development.

LegaSea campaigns for better fisheries management to help restore our inshore fish life to abundance. Fish are our last freely accessible wild resource however there is still a complex range of pressures on the resource whether from commercial, customary or recreational interests, not to mention the impacts of climate and land run off. Our relatively young New Zealand has depleted this wild resource in a little over 100 years.

Simon will provide an understanding of LegaSea’s core purpose, explain their Fish Care and Kai Ika initiatives, give you an insight into how and why our fisheries have been so decimated, what’s happening in the Hauraki Gulf, (including the recent Waiheke Rahui), what’s happening to core species like tarakihi and crayfish, the problems with the Quota Management System and what the chances are like for us to fix it.
