President's Message

On Sunday I had the pleasure of meeting with our cluster Presidents and ADG Pam Clarke to discuss how the clubs are going.  There was certainly the feeling that there was a lot going on and clubs do at times feel the pressure.  We are no different and as we head towards winter I believe that we have our programme in place and should not stray outside that.
A new interesting concept was that one club has removed the “committee” structure and have strategically identified 7 causes which remains their focus during the year. An innovative way at looking at what they are trying to achieve. It is the “why” that should be at the forefront of the direction we take.  New ideas are certainly not wrong but change management is always the hardest to implement.

Our evening meetings certainly produce surprises and the quality of our speakers have been fantastic. Well done to Mark and Brian for bringing these speakers into the club.  If you are not attending these meetings you will miss out on experiences and exposures that you may not necessarily have experienced previously.

Don’t forget NO morning meeting this Thursday and we look forward to seeing you at the Trivia event Friday night.

Kindest regards,

Allan

Review of April 4th Meeting
32 Members and 13 Guests were welcomed to our evening meeting by President Allan.  A thorough summary of upcoming events was provided and details of these are covered off in this edition of the Bulletin - be sure to read on for all details.

Pip Block is the Owner and Director of A1 Student.  Pip earned her Bachelor of Arts and Post Graduate Certificate in Education degrees in the UK and began teaching in 1994. Prior to joining the Saint Kentigern community in 2011 she worked for the Life Education Trust in Auckland for 5 years.

In 2014 Peter Cassie, Principal of Saint Kentigern Boys’ School, introduced the Arrowsmith Programme and Pip was chosen to train in Toronto, Canada, as a full-time Arrowsmith teacher. Her passion to help people learn drew her to this programme and she has helped many students achieve some exceptional life-changing results.

After 25 years in teaching, she has established A1 Student in order to expand her current teaching capacity to reach more students.  She now operates two classrooms dedicated to teaching this programme.   She deals with "individual students", not classes and the NZL Ministry of Education have just recently  approved A1 as an official school recognizing the work she does.

To help explain and demonstrate how Pip works and to give us a living example of her achievements, Pip was joined on stage by two current students, Riley and Josh, both of whom were delightful young men and certainly very good examples of the positive results that have been achieved.

RYDA
Last Tuesday April 2nd, 248 Year 12 students from Glendowie Collage, 10 GDC teachers, 15 Facilitators and 8 St Johns Rotary Volunteers, assembled at Alexander Park Convention centre for 5 hours  of Road Safety Education under the umbrella of RYDA, "Rotary Youth Driver Awareness ".

RYDA workshops are conducted by Road Safety Education, (RSE), a not for profit organisation, for year 9 - 12 students and the workshop provides practical and powerful workshops to change the way young people think about road safety.

RSE works with 650 Schools in Australia and New Zealand delivering the workshops to over 50,000 students annually.  St. Johns Rotary supports these workshops annually by paying for the students to attend and, as noted above, 248 GDC students attended.  Over many years, Nigel Robinson coordinated this programme on behalf of St Johns and it was very fitting last Tuesday morning when Gary Key paid tribute to Nigel for his effort over the years followed by a minute silence.
This year Gary coordinated our involvement and assistance on the day, and he was ably supported by a team of 7, the 5  pictured with Gary, plus Isabella and Alex who were unfortunately missing in action when this photo was taken.  To see additional photos and some comments received from participants on the day, click "Read More", here.

Gonzalo's Corner
During this week I had my first assessment in maths and I am so happy because I got full marks. I cooked “dulce de leche” and liquor for my host family. On Saturday night I had dinner in Portofino with my friends, and I made gnocchis for my family and we went to Stonefields market.

Women in Rotary Walk
The walk to acknowledge "Women in Rotary", took place on a very wet Saturday April 6th.  Despite the inclement weather, there was an enthusiastic turn out for the event.
and PE Robyn and Fellowship Coordinator Michelle  F, represented the Club.  Well done ladies.

Click the link below to hear a statement about the 30 year Anniversary of Women in Rotary which aired on Radio NZ National (RNZ) on Sunday morning.  The "Three Minutes Max" statement is a short, sharp opinion as stated by Dr Claire Matthews, director of academic quality at Massey University and she talks about the 30th anniversary of women being able to be part of Rotary International clubs."

RYPEN 2019
Further to the article on RYPEN in last weeks Bulletin, Ainie has asked to have a few extra comments made and  publish a correction.

1. Glendowie College Interact club members x 6 were participants and their  contribution for the weekend was presenting and speaking about Interact club.   They were not Facilitators.

2. Main and major support for the weekend came from the Rotary Club of Papakura, George Wilson (deputy chair of District Youth) and Grant Matheson as camp dad. Their members also helped with transport coordination too.

3. Hilary Prior, Rotary Club of Downtown, was our camp weekend administrator and looks after all the emotional needs of the young students.

4. All leaders came from past RYLArians and Rotaractors.  They will be running next year's  program with District Youth Committee overseeing it.
