President's Message

Well congratulations to all who participated in the Golf Tournament and what a great event it was. We already have commitments for next year and so the process should flow well. The effort is worth it and as soon as we have some results we will let you know. 😊

Unfortunately I am not able to be at next weeks meeting as family events call. As a family we get excited at this time of year as the Beach Hop takes place in Whangamata. This is such a good time for my grandson Zachery.

With lots happening please make sure that you are up to-date with the events that are happening on our schedule highlighted below.

Kindest regards,

Allan

Stories
Obituary - Mick Ashcroft
It is with sadness that we report the passing last night of Mick Ashcroft.  Mick was a very active member of St. Johns Rotary in the 1990's and early 2000's and since resigning he has been a frequent visitor.  Mick was very instrumental in setting up the St. Johns Rotary Sailing Scholarship which continues to this day administered by Yachting New Zealand.  Our sincere condolances to his family - RIP Mick.
Breakfast Meeting March 21st
A total of 32 members and three guest were welcomed to the meeting by President Allan.  President Allan again reminded all members in attendance of the long list of activities that are planed for the next few months - we look forward to seeing a good number of members joining in to support these events.  See below for full details.

Our very own International Youth Exchange Student, Gonzalo from Argentina, was our guest speaker at this meeting.  This was Gonzalo's first formal presentation and members present were very interested to hear of his insights into his life in the state of Cordoba and the many similarities between Argentina and New Zealand, i.e.  love of food and wine, production of some of the worlds best beef and wine, scenic beauty, and Argentinians love of football, although I think he was referring to soccer football vs rugby football, although they are not too bad at rugby either.  Gonzalo also shared with us his Rotary activities at home where he was very active as Interact President, and very active and supportive of Rotary Projects.  We look forward to hearing further from Gonzalo as the year goes by and learning more about Argentina, his family and life in Cordoba.

Gonzalo has agreed to make a contribution to each weeks Bulletin, sharing with us what he has been getting up to during his New Zealand stay.  This contribution starts this week and appears below.

St Johns Golf Tournament
At the time of going to print, final financial results from the Golf Tournament were unavailable, but indications are that we have done very well and again sincere thanks to all involved for their efforts and the months of hard work in advance that ensured not only a fun day, but a financially beneficial one as well, which will help St Johns Rotary continue to support Kids Can and myriad of other charities and local youth projects.  Please click "Read More" for more photos of the day.

Gonzalo's Corner
As mentioned above, as time permits, our IYE Student Gonzalo will contribute to the Bulletin each week with a brief update on what he has been up to so other members can keep up to date with his activities while he is here.  Should you and your family be planning any interesting outings that you think Gonzalo would enjoy, please don't hesitate to contact his host family to arrange such a visit.

His first contribution follows;

"Hello, in this week I had two trips, on Sunday and Saturday I went to Taupo and did good activities, like having dinner in a restaurant in Taupo, watching the sunset, and other things, it was a very fun trip. On Tuesday and Wednesday we went to Roturua and Hobbiton, and it was an amazing trip, I really enjoyed every second. New Zealand has many beautiful places, and now I know a little more, my family makes me know different places in New Zealand and it's brilliant."  Click "Read More" for additional photos from Gonzalo's.

A unique opportunity

D9920 Rotary Youth exchange offers students aged between 15 to 18 the chance to go on exchange for 12 months for 2020.
Applications close soon (30 April) and Rotary members have the opportunity to present this programme to their family and the wider community

We would like clubs to support this programme as part of Rotary’s youth programme which also includes RYPEN and RYLA.
RYE sits nicely between the age groups of those two programmes.

RYE offers the chance for students to live in another country for 12 months with the support of host families and Rotary. It is a unique opportunity that cannot be matched later in life and it develops the confidence and leadership of young people and opens opportunities that they would not otherwise enjoy

The D9920 committee can answer any questions and also explain how and exchange and attending university are not mutually exclusive. Every Rotarian will know a family that will have or in turn know someone interested in the programme

We would greatly appreciate your bringing this to the attention of your members and asking them to each forward the attached notice  to people that might have an interest

We would also be pleased if you could include the attached flyer on you club website and in a couple of bulletins between now and mid April

Your assistance in bringing this programme to the attention of the wider community is appreciated

There is no commitment for you club to host or sponsor a student, but of course your assistance in sponsoring a student (which has a very modest cost) would be very much appreciated

Applications close 30 April so your early support would be greatly appreciated

Contact D9920 RYE chair Tracey Faber rye9920chair@gmail.com  or visit the RYE website www.youthexchange.org.nz  for more information and application form.

Regards and thanking you for your support
