President's Message

Well where has the last 4 weeks gone and so much has happened both here in NZ and overseas. Habitat Cambodia, Clean-ups in Glen Innes, and Sue and I had the honour to be at the New York marathon with 35 athletes and supporters who have disabilities.

I have attached both a couple of photos and also a link to an article that Mike McRoberts did in regards to one of our athletes.

Mike Lloyd (also a Board member of Achilles NZ) is a 48 year old, completely blind and has Parkinsons.  This was his 10th Marathon at New York and the link tells his story.

He also works with the Foundation for the Blind, his partner Laura is also blind and so they always live in the dark. So inspiring and makes you think how determination will provide greater results. Enjoy the story.

What a buzz to be back. When you are travelling there is no place like home being with friends and family.  Last weeks meeting as an AGM really highlighted what our club is achieving and making a difference.

Our Directors are certainly leading the way to ensure that we have fun but also helping our community.  Next week Miles and the Team will be sharing their trip to Cambodia to support Habitat and then our last meeting of the year will be on the 13th.

However, don’t forget to support Miles and the Team outside New World, Lunn Ave to create a food bank for those in our community who are not so well off to have a great Xmas.

Kindest regards,

Allan

Breakfast Meeting & AGM - Nov 29th
The November 29th meeting was somewhat of a double header.

A short and sweet AGM, followed by a very interesting presentation from Dr. Julie Robson - "A Pest Free Urban Sanctuary."

The highlight of the AGM was a presentation by IPP Peter Buchanan who recapped the activity during his Presidential year, July 2017 - June 2018.  An excellent year - well done Peter and also a big thanks and congrats to all St Johns members for their active and enthusiastic participation.  The Minutes of the meeting will be circulated in due course.

Eastern Bays residents are flocking to join a national ‘predator-free’ campaign helping increase the numbers of native songbirds in their gardens, parks and reserves.

The Eastern Bays Songbird Project was set up in 2017 by local bird and restoration enthusiasts, many of whom have been working in the area for decades. The project has quickly brought together locals and gained support from others further afield who are keen to rid their neighborhoods of rats and other mammalian pests.

So far over 200 rat traps have been set on private properties and in local reserves to help control rat numbers.

Project Manager Julie Robson advised the meeting that rats are a major problem for our native wildlife.  They eat the eggs of birds and compete for food sources including fruits and seeds."

Lots of people have been keen to help get rid of rats and have taken one of the traps out on loan.  Julie and her team teach people how to safely set and check the traps, provide "Catch statistics", and provide ongoing support."

If you would like to get involved;  visit songbird.org.nz to see how, or contact Julie Robson at joolzr@gmail.com or 021 836 540.
