President's Message

Don't just sit in the house; go outside and enjoy.

Just go back inside and watch TV. It is safer at your age.

Often this is the easy option that can be taken and yet those who are successful in many aspects of life are those who are not seeking reward but merely the satisfaction of participation, meeting new people and giving. This is a decision that only you can make but it opens up so many new doors. Friendships are so valuable and this reflects a lot of giving and participation in everything that you do.

Today was our golf Tournament and the weather was kind. We are excited what this event will do to the KidsCan community. Over the next few weeks there is a lot on (see below) and I look forward to seeing your participation in action.

See you all on Thursday!

Kindest regards,

Allan

Stories
Breakfast Meeting March 14 - "Combined Committee Meeting"
A total of 27 members turned up for this the first Combined Committee Meetings this calendar year.  Below are a brief summary of discussions that took part in 3 of the Committees;

Kevin Kevany - Youth Services, has moved easily under new management. And to mark the occasion, yet another Manaiakalani institution, Ruapotaka School in Point England, also under a new principal, Allison Hamilton, who grew up nearby, is linking into Have-a-Go sailing, something she is particularly excited to bring to her pupils; Discovery, ditto; and Dictionaries in Schools – for starters. Penny Leyland’s Toothbrushes in Schools – which has dramatically changed the dental health of youngsters in Otahuhu over 10-years -- is brushing up a froth at St Pius. Watch this space for the next school.  RYPEN is over the last weekend in March with +50 youngsters from schools in our ‘parish’ attending a camp in the Hunuas.   RYLA interviews will begin shortly.  Don’t forget to send Tom/ Namrata details of any young people 20-28 you’ve come across, to be assessed for this prestigious award in mid-April.

Miles Cain - Community, had a meeting with good attendance.
Three projects were discussed.
1/ Planting at the CAB garden in Glen Innes
2/ Plan to fund and build a school vegetable garden at Glen Innes School next Rotary year
3/ Looking at the feasibility of running a school art competition similar to one held in Taupo called “It is not OK to litter”
Firstly we need to get the local authorities approval as we want the successful artwork to be displayed in the community.
Below is one of  the posters that appeared on the footpath pavings in Taupo.

This project has the potential of giving the club and Rotary great public exposure.

Brian Fergus - Club Services Committee Report;
1. Debate with Auckland East - all organised, being led by Angus.
2. Evening speaker programme, organised out to June.  We still need suggestions for breakfast speakers
3. Anzac breakfast. Being organosed by Michele M.  Remuera club will be invited to attend.
4. Evening meals. Generally agreed the quality has lifted with the $30 charge for which we get 2 protein dishes. Chef, however, will be asked to provide seasonal vegetables and not just a salad
5. Changeover, confirmed for the 28th June

St Johns Golf Tournament
This annual event was held today and what a great day it was.  The endless summer continued throughout the day, right up until the prize giving was over and guests started to leave the Golf Club.
A huge thank you to David Hartstone who once again led the charge organizing the event.  He was supported by a large number of volunteers from the Club as well as securing a significant number of sponsors, many of whom have agreed to return next year.

The first place went to Chris Herlihy Team 2.  Chris wasn't actually in this team, but St Johns can claim an association with the winning team - well done Chris.  Isabella and Beryl also won raffles so although not a lot of golf skills required with these wins - well done and thanks for the support.

More comments and pictures next week.
