I spent this morning trawling the internet looking for something interesting to write about. All the news channels seems to full of COVID-19 and/or how to cope with lockdown. Some thoughts:
Be kind to yourself & others. Lower your expectations.
Notice the good in the world – the helpers
Find a long-term project to dive into.
Find lightness and humour in each day
Ask for help/Talk to people
Remind yourself that this is temporary
Try to find the lesson – is their anything we can learn
It would be great if our fellow club members shared what they are doing via the Bulletin for inspiration!
As we continue in Covid-19 Level 3, 24 members plus our Guest Speaker linked in for another Thursday Zoom meeting. 😊
President Hugh welcomed all members who participated in a general discussion as we awaited the arrival of our guest speaker.
Peter B. gave a brief update on the upcoming club visit to Rotoroa Island. To date there are 10 booked and as we are required to confirm numbers very soon, if there are others wanting to participate, please contact Peter immediately and he will do what he can to have our allocated numbers increased to accommodate any late registrations.
Another club activity on the horizon is the MS Street Appeal scheduled to be held on September 18 - 19. St. Johns Rotary will be providing collectors in the foyer of New World, Lunn Ave - if you can assist and haven't already registered, please contact Leslie.
It was then time to hear from our Guest Speaker, Mary Panko who is the President of the "End of Life Choice Society, NZL". Mary's presentation was very informative and it was evident that many members had details regarding the upcoming referendum clarified one way or the other, and they will now potentially be better prepared to vote in line with their support or otherwise. Mary was happy for us to record her presentation, and thanks to technology, and the skills demonstrated by IPP Robyn, the presentation is available to be viewed by any interested members who missed the meeting. Many thanks Mary, for your time and presentation to our members and for allowing us to record the presentation which will allow more members the opportunity of hearing your position on this very important matter.
Guest Speaker - Chris Makoare, Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board Chair. Chris has lived in Glen Innes for 30 years where he is now a community leader. He is a solo dad who has four children, aged 17 to 25, all of whom attended Glendowie College where Chris worked for eight years as a Sports Coordinator. Chris has been manager of the Glen Innes Family Centre, a local social service provider, for the past two years. He's been active in a parent and youth network and was trained as a community facilitator for the Tamaki Transformation Programme.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 3rd - Dinner Meeting, Remuera Golf Club 6.00 pm (Venue TBC).
Guest Speaker Holly Sutich,
Phoric is the brainchild of Bradley Hagan and Holly Sutich. The duo witnessed first-hand thousands of University students consuming countless, artificial energy drinks to keep up, but feeling guilty for it. So, they made it their mission to create a natural, clean alternative. The pair were the Overall Supreme Winner and Winner of the Social Enterprise category at the AUT X-Challenge, landing a $35,000 investment to develop their idea. Phoric will donate five cents from every bottle sold to mental health and their ambition is to increase that to twenty cents over four years.
Promoted as a natural energy drink for the new generation, Phoric is now widely available in many supermarkets and convenience stores.
Holly will talk about her journey since leaving school, going to university and starting Phoric.
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 10th - Breakfast Meeting, Remuera Golf Club 7.00 am.
Guest Speaker Shirin Brown - Labour Candidate Tamaki. Shirin has a background in local government, community advocacy, strategic planning and teaching, both in New Zealand and overseas.
Shirin was twice elected and served for six years in Auckland local government (2013-2019). She has a track record of working effectively with communities, NGOs and government departments to get great outcomes for local people and for the environment. Her time on the local board included developing social procurement criteria to allow local businesses and NGOs to compete for local government waste contracts, turning over occupation and management of community halls to community groups, and initiatives that support youth engagement and participation. She also successfully advocated for people to take citizenship ceremonies in Te Reo Māori.
Pictured here is the special "Service Award", recently given to Donald via Zoom. It was, however, subsequently delivered to him on his doorstep as he was packing up for his move to Taupo 😀
Once again Donald, very best wishes to you and Penny as you move south and begin a new episode in your life and thank you sincerely for all your contributions to our club as well as to the community who have benefited enormously from your efforts over the years.
Once again our club supplied a team of volunteers to assist with the packing of ongoing Rotary Emergency Response Kit's, (ERK's), and the following email thanking our club and specifically the team from St.Johns, for their efforts.
A thank you email from District is inserted below, while our club ERK coordinators, Penny Mc and Lesley H also have extended their thanks. There will be more calls for help in the weeks and months ahead and hopefully St. Johns Rotary will be able to continue to provide teams of willing helpers.
