Good Evening Wonderful Members of Rotary Club of St Johns
A great turn out last week for Club Business, Project and Committee discussions. Thank you so much for your dedication and enthusiasm to refine our volunteer work. If you looked at the print-out of the project database, heck do we do a lot! Really happy to see all the lively discussions and to receive your collective feedback on everything we do.
This week we get to enjoy newest member Shaun with his first Snap Chat; followed by guest speaker Sharon Crean from Beyond Water, a not-for-profit organization with the mission to alleviate poverty through the provision of safe, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to communities across East Africa.
I look forward to sharing another breakfast with my favourite network of Rotarians.
A good turn-out last Thursday, with 30 members welcomed by President,"Ravishing" Robyn, for the last Combined Committee Meetings for the year. Minutes as received from the various committees will be published under "Read More" below. Copies of other committee Minutes not received at the time the printers started to run, will be published in next weeks Bulletin.
IPP Allan has just returned from a visit to Vanuatu and while there he participated in a Luncheon Meeting with the Rotary Club of Port Vila. It was a "Round Table" meeting with 28 participants and the majority of the meeting time was dedicated to discussions revolving around the series of events and projects in train. Allan was presented with the Port Vila Club Banner, which in turn he presented to President Robyn on Thursday. Allan will ensure the St. Johns Banner presented in return will be forwarded to Vanuatu.
Prior to breaking out in the various committee groups, President Robyn reminded all of the various activities planned for the rest of the year of which more details are included under the story, "Club Activities and other Important Dates", below. There was also some good news to share regarding the District Conference which is also covered off further in this Bulletin.
Pictured here is the "Club Services" team at last Thursday's Meeting and as PP Colin shared with the group, "Every minute you spend in planning saves you 10 minutes in execution, which gives you a thousand percent return on energy, hence these combined meetings are very important and it is no wonder that we do so well as a club".
GUEST SPEAKER, SHARON CREAN, FOUNDER OF "BEYONDWATER":
"BeyondWater", is a not-for-profit organization working across East Africa. Their focus is on ensuring schools, medical clinics, children's home and remote communities have access to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. In November 2007 Pete and Sharon Crean were living in Sydney, Australia. They were presented with the fact that one billion people don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water and another two billion don’t have the use of a toilet. They gathered a team of volunteers who were enthusiastic in doing something to alleviate poverty in East Africa and started BeyondWater.
Esteemed Treasurer/Secretary Alex Gatt will present annual accounts for RCSJ and RCSJ Charitable Trust; and will cover usual AGM business. Then IPP Allan Smith will present on his successful year (June 2018 - June 2019). But wait, there's more...
Guest Speaker: Jennie Herring, Rotary Foundation
Many members may not fully understand how the "Rotary Foundation" works and some of the projects involved. It is not just Polio!!!.... it is many projects throughout both New Zealand and the world, including our own Onja project in Madagascar. Jennie, as a past District Governor, brings many experiences of Rotary to us and this will be a great opportunity for learning and have our horizons lifted.
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 28th, BREAKFAST MEETING GUEST SPEAKER HARRY RAINU:
Harry is the WasteWise Coordinator for the Waste Solutions Unit / Infrastructure and Environmental Services of Auckland Council. He is responsible for the education and development of programmes encouraging Aucklander's to manage Waste differently.
This difficult issue touches everyone. It signals change to a smaller or greater degree for every household, but these are changes that we, as Aucklanders, can make together because we know for sure that they are for the good of the city and for all of us. This plan is about reducing the waste we throw into the bin, and about recycling and reusing more. We know that many of the resources we depend on, which we have often taken for granted, are becoming scarce. Yet there is so much we can do to ensure that resources we previously regarded as of no use – such as food / green waste and industrial waste – are fully used, and reused, reducing what we send to landfills. We want to aim high but also make sure we take people with us. In particular, the vulnerable must be protected and supported – that is why any changes will be made carefully over a period of four years. All the actions that this plan will eventually require of us, are ones we would expect of a country that brands itself as clean and green, and of a city that aspires to be the world’s most liveable.

It only seems like yesterday that Miles and his team left to build a Habitat house in Thailand. Well alas, the house is now completed and the group are now enjoying a relaxing tour in Thailand.
Miles reported earlier that the weather was great, the build was ahead of schedule, under budget and that there had been no injuries. Unfortunately on the day of completion, and as the home was dedicated and readied and handed to the new owners, the skies opened up. However, the rain didn't detract from the event and the pictures below tell a beautiful story.
Job completed by a fantastic team! Well done Miles.
RYLA 2020. A week long leadership camp for 20-28 year olds
RYLA, the "Rotary Youth Leadership Awards" is a significant programme that our club supports strongly every year and we are aiming to get underway asap on the task of recruiting candidates for next year's RYLA, and in particular, wishing to make greater contacts with local businesses who may be interested in sponsoring some of their up and coming leaders.
Please, can all members who have local business contacts and/or family members who may be eligible and interested, contact Tom Street on 021 685 651. Anyone wishing to help with the processes through to July next year may also like to join Tom at an induction meeting to be hosted by the organising club, Papatoetoe RC, at 6pm tomorrow, 12th November, in the Jack Dickey community hall, Green Lane.
Due to a technical problem last week, Gonza's photos didn't show up in the Bulletin, so here they are now. RCSJ is very proud of our RYE Student! Gonza received a special service certificate for services to GDC Interact, presented at the final senior school assembly two weeks ago. Gonza (wearing his GDC Leaver's Jersey) had no idea he was getting this certificate - and this lovely photo shows how surprised he was! Thanks so much for taking an interest in GDC Interact while you were at GDC Gonza.
Here he is in his official capacity as guest "timer" for a stage of the Targa Rally (currently in progress). If you would like to see him in a BJ-8 Austin Healey and other pictures of his recent experiences, click "Read More".
