President's Message

Thank you all for being so positive about our first meeting of the year - despite the rumbling tummies! We had a great turnout and got some really useful feedback from this session which the Board and Committee's will be working with. A feedback summary is included further on in this bulletin.

I have already been listening to your advice and one change I did announce was my intention to reorder our 'speaker' meetings so the Speaker starts directly after the meal (if there is one)! This will ensure attendees can enjoy the entire presentation and are not having to impolitely creep away before the speaker has finished.

This week is the first Combined Committee meet which offers Directors and Committee's the perfect opportunity to set-up for the year.  A list of Committees is included below as a separate story.. If you want to change Committee - it is not too late. Just have a word with the Directors concerned.

See you all on Thursday morning - and for a special treat we just might have breakfast!

Warm regards
Robyn

July 4th Meeting in Review
A good turnout for the first Breakfast meeting of the new Rotary year with 31 members braving the wet, cold and wind to gather for a delicious hot Breakfast waiting for all - but hang on a minute - there's nothing in them there trays!!!   Is this the new President's way of getting us to not eat so much, or is it just the result of someone, (no names mentioned), having messed up!   With all the finger pointing going on we will probably never know!

The first official photo of new President Robyn in action behind the podium welcoming the very hungry 31 members present - doesn't she look good!

Our new President's first official duty, and a very worthwhile one at that, was passing on a presentation to New World, Lunn Ave and more specifically to Mr Fabian - the certificate presented read; "Certificate of Appreciation from the Rotary Clubs of Remuera and St Johns, for New World's contribution towards the Quiz Night Fundraiser which supported Rotary Club of Remuera's Oxygen Project"

The Rotary Club of Remuera also presented the Rotary Club of St Johns a "Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of our significant contribution towards the Fiji Oxygen Project".  President Robyn was in attendance at the Remuera Club's Change-Over last week and she was delighted to accept this on our behalf.

Have Your Say 2019 -2020

For the first meeting of the new Rotary year, President Robyn took the opportunity to have a “discussion” with members and invited all present to complete a Member Survey.  Discussion points and feedback were recorded by Membership Director, Donald.  Directors will use this valuable information moving forward this year.  If you missed the survey, this has been emailed to all members separately.  For the meeting notes, please click READ MORE.

This last two weeks I have been doing a lot and everything was amazing. I did the “Tough Guy and Gal” which was a run with a lot of obstacles like wires with electricity, dirty stuff but it was really good at the end. I enjoyed this experience because it was my first dirty run.

Also the last weekend was Blair's birthday with all his family, and it was really lovely because this was my last weekend with the lovely Peach family.

I donated blood for NZ blood (they came to Glendowie College) and this weekend was my change of family. Now I’m with Robyn’s family, and I went with her family to Ohakune to have an beautiful weekend. We went to the new gondola and it was the first time that I have been in a gondola. It was actually a beautiful experience.

Subject: Volunteers for World Championships December 2019 RAYC
Hi Gary

When I saw you on the last day of the Rotary Volvo Sailing Have A Go! sailing days we discussed briefly the opportunity for volunteers to get involved in the upcoming major world championship event Yachting New Zealand is hosting in conjunction with Royal Akarana Yacht Club.

It is the world championships and final Olympic qualifying event and selection trials for a lot of countries in the lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so it is looking to be a great and exciting event to be a part of. The classes racing are the high flying exciting classes – 49ers, 49er FX, and Nacra 17 catamarans.

The main event runs between 3rd December to 8th December, but the week prior we have a pre-regatta and there will be registration and measurement of 200 yachts to manage in between. So need helpers across both weeks basically any help on any days between the 24th November and the 8th December will be appreciated.

I am wondering if you are please able to share the invitation to be involved in this event and sign up to volunteer their time and expertise to help us in the event. We have lots of on shore roles or on water helpers roles needing to be filled. We are ultimately looking for about 150 people to help out over the course of the event, we are expecting to be hosting at least 400 sailors, plus coaches, managers and supporters.

To sign up we are asking volunteers to complete the form in this link: https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/get-involved-49erfx-nacra-17-world-champs
The form asks for information about the person volunteering, next of kin and any health information or dietary requirements we need to know about, and we ask what they would like to do and they are available.

I appreciate your help circulating this with your members (and their networks), it will be a neat event to be a part of, something a bit different perhaps for many of your members.

Please contact me with any questions or direct your interested members to get in touch.
Thank you for your help.

Kind regards
Raynor

Time for a Smile
Phil and Andy are out hiking through the woods when they notice a big, deep hole near the track.
"That looks deep," observes Phil. "Let's toss some pebbles in to see how deep it really is."
So they gathered up some pebbles, tossed them in and wait ... ... ... no noise.
"Wow! It must be really deep," says Andy. "Let's try some bigger rocks and see what happens."
They find a couple of rocks, the size of basket balls, throw them in and wait ... ... ... still no noise.
Looking around them, Phil noticed an old railway sleeper in amongst the undergrowth.
"Let's throw that down the hole," he suggested. "It's so big and heavy it's bound to make a noise."
With great difficulty they manoeuvre the sleeper to the edge of the hole and heave it in.
They're still listening when there's an almighty crashing noise behind them. They turn and see a goat racing out of the undergrowth as fast as its legs will carry it. It rushes past them, leaps into the air and straight down the hole. They are amazed.
A moment later an old farmer comes ambling out of the woods.
"Have you seen my goat?" he enquires?
"Yes," reply the two friends. "It was the craziest thing we ever saw. It came running out of the woods like a mad thing and jumped straight down that hole."
"Oh no," says the farmer. "That can't have been my goat. My goat was chained to a railway sleeper!"

Have a wonderful day with many *smiles*.
