This Thursday morning, we look forward to hearing from a key organisation in our Glen Innes community when Patsy Sim speaks to us about the Glen Innes Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). CAB services include the foodbank, budgeting, JP visits, and legal advice. Our club recently gave financial assistance to the CAB for the purchase of school clothing for a family, and also contributes to the foodbank.
As Cyclone Gita continues on its course towards NZ, Rotary is responding to the devastation in Tonga thanks to Rotary personnel on the ground and the Emergency Response Kits (ERKs) that had earlier been distributed there from NZ. Each year, club members here assist with packing ERKs, and their importance is clear in the face of such damage and dislocation. Our Board has sent a donation for ERKs.
If not already please reserve your tickets for the Taveuni Is. Trivia Night, on Thurs. 1 March - at Glen Taylor School.
This week’s guest speaker was Roger Green who has 33 years’ experience working with people with addictions such as drugs and alcohol. Roger is Founder and Director of the New Zealand Retreat Auckland (NZRA) which operates a facility in Otahuhu and opened in April 2013. It is similar in concept to the Retreat at Wayzata, Minnesota, USA. Though modelled on the Twelve Steps principles of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) there is no affiliation with AA. Nevertheless, AA has been around for 85 years and has continued to be the by far the most effective rehab programme.
“Action of Choice” reflects what Rotary is all about and as members of a great Rotary club I was somewhat surprised at the lack of willingness to be involved in the management of the club. For those who have indicated their willingness to take on a role we thank you. 😊
Often, I hear from members that there appears to be a divide between the old members and the new. I can understand that but by being involved it can help breakdown this divide. Since I have been involved on the Board I have felt a compelling understanding of what Rotary is about and how we can be an important part of the community. Great friendships also develop.
We appreciate that members belong for many reasons both socially and project community actions locally and internationally. However, Robyn and I need help to finalise the team to support the club over the next 12 months / 2 years.
What we need help with are the following:
Management of the Bulletin (2 x person/s makes this job easier and Robyn will assist)
Website / Facebook management
Social fellowship
Special Projects convenor
These are important to the club functioning well and if you can assist please give me a ring.
