Basketball Leadership Camp :15 - 16 June, Panmure Lagoon Leisure Centre

Youth Basketball New Zealand (YBNZ) is a holistic development organization
Using basketball as a platform to better the lives of young people. The programme is
designed and overseen by Stuart McEwen, who after finishing a playing career in the US
Collegiate system in 2016, began coaching local primary, intermediate and high school students. He has seen drastic improvements in students in the youth space and believes more of our best coaches & mentors need to be working at this level.
Benefits of YBNZ Youth Development Camp:

● Develops coordination and motor skills
● Increases fitness
● Teaches self discipline and personal life skills/ethics
● Teamwork skills and socially interactive
● Wellness
● Improves confidence
● A FUN and FRIENDLY experience
● A SUPPORTIVE and NON-COMPETITIVE environment

Key Outcomes & Measurement Strategies:
1. Wellness Improvement: During our camp sessions players will be assessed on
Basic skills of basketball: shooting, passing, dribbling and decision making. They will
also be given an opportunity to improve their speed, agility and other fitness
components.  These on court components will also be combined with life skills, mindfulness,
Yoga philosophy, communication exercises as a way to address and support other
areas of their development.

2. Growth In Participation : Feedback from local school sports officials or community
coaches on numbers of kids playing prior to “Youth Development Camp” and
following on with registrations for up-coming school/club seasons and competitions. Some
of which will be run by YBNZ.

3. Enhance Community Sport Pathways: By providing support to the community
We hope to establish more basketball opportunities for the youth to continue their
development in basketball and life. By the youth participating in their sport within a club or school team structure they open up further opportunities for basketball on the domestic/international stage, including using their sports for career opportunities.

Camp Target Group:
The focus is intermediate aged youth, in years 7/8 in the Manaiakalani group of
schools in the East Auckland area, who are not currently involved in any or much physical
activity due to major barriers (such as cost, travel, exclusion, low confidence, etc.) and who
would otherwise not be exposed to such activities. This will be done through on court individual and team skill sessions   and   personal   development   activities   to   improve   the   wellness, motivation and discipline of the participants.

The East Auckland area has several suburbs and hubs whose residents
sometimes miss sporting/life opportunities due to factors out of their control. Some of these
include: financial pressures and difficulties, misinformation, lack of guidance and awareness of opportunities within sport. YBNZ aims to bridge the gap and provide the necessary support to help disadvantaged youth. This camp is used as a way to empower the region to
enhance the sporting opportunities of their people.

YBNZ Involvement:
YBNZ will be utilizing their staff of coaches and sports professionals to deliver the
camp, however their coaches (teachers/staff), parents and sports support
figures who could use the camps as a platform for their own development will be
welcome to attend as an important component of the YBNZ camps is coach
development.
