Meeting in Review - Nov 26th 2020
23 members and 3 guests enjoyed our breakfast meeting last Thursday.  IPP Robyn stood in for President Hugh who had pressing work commitments and was unable to attend.

The meeting commenced with an update from Chilean Exchange Student Isi, followed by club notices, an update from the Stonefields Residents Association and our Guest Speaker.

Isi Ravanal - RYE Student:
Isi is now the last exchange student in the District, as Covid19 has severely disrupted this year's programme for many students.  Isi gave a big thumbs up to the recent South Island tour which took the group "almost everywhere".  She made some good friends and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Isi has now finished school and before she departs NZL, she has some local activities planned and she has also recently helped with the Salvation Army Food Bank packing project.  If any members have any exciting outings planned over the next few weeks that you think may interest Isi, please contact IPP Robyn.

Club Notices:
  • A reminder to all members that the GI Food Bank collection project is scheduled for Dec 12th at New World, Lunn Ave.  Penny is still looking for a few more volunteers to ensure that the day is completely staffed.
  • The 15th of December will be the last Salvation Army Foodbank packing day - volunteers please contact IPP Robyn.
  • The year's last two meetings will be held 3rd and 10th of December.  Excellent speakers are scheduled, (see story below), and RSVP's are required.  Remember on Dec 10th to bring a suitable, (dry goods), donation to the Foodbank supported by our guest speaker.
Paul Van Dorsten:
One of the contacts made by our membership team at the recent Stonefields Family Day was Paul Van Dorsten.  Paul who is the Chair of the Stonefields Residents Association, was subsequently invited to breakfast last week and presented a brief overview to the attendees on activities undertaken by the association.

There are currently 6,000 residents in Stonefields and this number will grow to 8,000 when all the building is finished.  One of their major projects will be the building of a community hall and planning is well down the track.

Guest Speaker - Dennis Millard:
Dennis is a member of the Rotary Club of Auckland East and he is also the Chair of "Trees for Survival", (TFS), a Rotary founded programme.

Dennis started with TFS just two weeks before lockdown so it has been a challenging 9 months as he has come to terms with the operation.  TFS was established 25 years ago and since then, with the help of participating schools, have planted in excess of 1.5 million trees in the Region..

The programme is primarily focused on Environmental Restoration and Education, both classroom and practical".

Funding for TFS comes from; Rotary, Charitable Trusts, Individual Donor's, Small Businesses, Schools and Auckland City Council.  There are currently 98 schools in Auckland participating and the Rotary Club of St. Johns has been a supporter for many years.  We are looking forward to remaining involved and particularly if local opportunities can be found, although it is acknowledged that finding suitable planting areas is not without challenges.

Hopefully you convinced him to change clubs John!

Great to see members who often struggle to get to breakfast meetings, making two in the month.

THURSDAY December 3rd - Dinner Meeting.  Venue - Remuera Golf Club.  Time  6.00pm for 6.30pm.
Guest Speaker Holly Sutich.  Holly is the Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Phoric

Phoric is the brainchild of Bradley Hagan and Holly Sutich. The duo witnessed first-hand thousands of University students consuming countless, artificial energy drinks, so they made it their mission to create a natural, clean alternative. The pair were the Overall Supreme Winner and Winner of the Social Enterprise category at the AUT X-Challenge, landing a $35,000 investment to develop their idea.

Promoted as a natural energy drink for the new generation, Phoric is now widely available in many supermarkets and convenience stores.  Holly will talk about her journey since leaving school, going to university and starting Phoric.

THURSDAY December 10th - Breakfast Meeting.  Venue - Remuera Golf Club.  Time  7.00am for 7.15am.
Guest Speaker Brown Buttabean AKA David Letele.

He is known in the Auckland community as the Brown Buttabean, a fitness motivator and life coach for many Pacific people struggling with their weight and fitness.  Samoan, David is also a boxer who changed his life by shedding 100 kilos.

He has been motivating hundreds of others to follow his lead and as a result is changing people's lives via health and fitness boot camps known as Buttabean Motivation.

Mr Letele says he just wants to reverse the alarming statistics among Pacific people suffering from high blood pressure and facing a higher risk of stroke, diabetes and heart disease.  He has thousands of followers on social media and he is motivated to give people a second chance to get healthier and live longer.  His organisation is currently working with our member Chris Herlihy (Headmaster of Glen Taylor School), on a two-day programme to be offered to other local primary schools.

Come and join us for our final meeting of the year to hear this great speaker and find out how we can help support our local primary schools with another great initiative.

In lieu of a $10 Secret Santa, we challenge all members to bring along a Christmas donation of non-perishable foodbank items, which will be given to our speaker to use in his foodbank service (another initiative offered through his BBM Program).

RSVPs, Apologies & Meeting Responsibilities
The following story was published in last weeks Bulletin, but as this is such an important one for all members, it is herewith repeated to ensure as many members as possible are reminded of these matters - Thanks.

RSVP Etiquette - Just a friendly reminder that it is handy to receive your Apologies (with a brief reason) if you are not able to make a meeting. This gives Club Services and Membership Team valuable intel for follow-up on wellbeing, catering (do we need more eggs...), and speaker planning.

Please remember, if you receive an RSVP email from us (particularly for our popular evening meetings), please respond Yes or No. A non-response doesn't necessarily mean 'No', so we often follow-up (sometimes twice more) to find out your intentions, ensuring we are not embarrassed by running out of food or seating. That follow-up creates quite a bit of extra work for our volunteers!

Meeting Responsibilities - Making our meetings and meeting-space welcoming each week requires background work aka Meeting Responsibilities. If you are assigned a Meeting Responsibility and are not sure what this entails - please ask your Rotary Buddy, or click onto this helpful Meeting Responsibilities Info Sheet link.

If you are unable to do the assigned job, as a responsible member of the Club you are expected to negotiate with another member to cover for you. Simply ignoring the assigned 'responsibility' is rather mean spirited and not 'fair to all concerned'. Most of the duties are really easy (e.g. Greeter! What's easier than welcoming everyone at the door as they arrive?) Any queries onMeeting Responsibilities, please contact Club Services - Robyn.

December Speakers
Herewith more detail on our last two speakers for the year.  Please note RSVP's are required for both the Dec 3rd and Dec 10th meetings.  Please let Robyn know now!
Sally Army Foodbank - Rewarding Work
Members Murray, Prabha and Robyn; and Isi (Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Chile) enjoyed a solid morning of work, helping out at the Salvation Army Foodbank (Manukau) last Tuesday. This is an ongoing project headed by Peter Ross, and many Rotary Clubs have been rotating through rostered 'help' days. This week we enjoyed the company of Rotarians from RC's of Newmarket and Half Moon Bay.

Murray was kept busy organising boxes and restocking shelves, while we girls blitzed the re-bagging of huge sacks of flour, rice and semolina into smaller more manageable packages. We were driven hard by Mr Ross (D9920 Special Programme Events Leaders Chair) who kept us going with the promise of a lovely lunch, supplied by Sally Army staff as a Christmas thank you for the awesome work Rotarians are doing at the Centre.

The final opportunity to assist (for this year)with this project is Tuesday 15 December. Let Robyn know if you want to tag along (generally 10am - 2pm).
Time For A Smile

...and a joke:

THE STORY OF TWO DIARIES - Men and Women -  recording things in their diaries.

Wife's Diary:

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner.

I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it.

Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed,  but he didn't say much.

I asked him what was wrong; He said, 'Nothing.

I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset.

He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it.

On the way home, I told him that I loved him.

He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behaviour. I don't know why he didn't say,  'I love you, too.'

When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore.  He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent.

Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed.  But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

Husband's Diary:

A one-foot putt … who the hell misses a one-foot putt?

Thanks for contribution Aubrey.
