President's Message

Good Evening Bulletin Readers

A thoroughly enjoyable meet last week with newest member Shaun sharing his “Rotary Moment” and the very engaging Sharon (from Beyond Water) with her info-packed presentation leaving us all with an extended understanding of how very difficult it is to progress without easy access to clean water! And it’s always super to have both our Inbound and Outbound RYE students join us. Gonza is now on his South Island trip (Motueka today) and Lachlan is immersed in exams.

We have a busy meeting planned for you all this week. First up will be our famously succinct AGM; followed by Immediate Past President Allan’s report on his great year; then nicely rounded up with our District Foundation Chair, Jennie Herring who will talk to us about how the Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world.

I’m looking forward to Thursday breakfast already - see you all there. 😊

Warm regards
Robyn

November 14th - Meeting in Review
Acting Sargeant John Cornaga introduced President "Rocking" Robyn at last weeks meeting which was attended by 24 members and 2 guests.  President Robyn reminded all members of the activities and the  important dates you need to know about between now and the end of the year.  All these dates and the information you need to know are covered off in the Bulletin below.  Please be sure to read on so that you too are fully briefed on what's coming up and what the club needs from you to ensure all events are fully subscribed and successful.

At last weeks Board Meeting the Board approved;
  • A "Top-up" donation to the Auckland City Mission, of $585 to bring the total donation to $750, following the recent visit to the club by City Mission CEO Chris Farrelly;
  • A donation of $500 to "Gifts for Kids", continuing the support that our club has given over recent years;
  • $1,200 to ERK's, particularly important at this time of the year as the Pacific Islands enter the Cyclone season;
  • The Board has also approved the purchase of two "Teardrop" banners for use at club sponsored / supported events.  If you need these please contact the President who will be the custodian of these.

Prior to hearing from our guest speaker, our new member, Shaun Peacock was our "Snap Chatter" on the day.  Shaun is a 29 year old lawyer who was introduced to Rotary at the District Conference in Fiji a few years ago.  He was very impressed with the way Rotary was involved with, "helping others less fortunate".  Following the District Conference, Shaun subsequently joined Auckland Rotoract, which then brought him to St. Johns and as they say, the rest is history.  Welcome Shaun and thanks for your presentation.

Our Guest Speaker on the day was Sharon Crean from "BeyondWater".

BeyondWater is a not-for-profit organization working across East Africa and their focus is on ensuring schools, medical clinics, children's home and remote communities have access to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.  These include deep bore wells, guttering, water tanks, hand washing facilities, toilets and health education programmes.  BeyondWater is registered as a trust both in New Zealand and Kenya, and as a charity in Australia.

In November 2007, Sharon and her husband Peter were living in Sydney.  They were presented with the fact that one billion people don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water and another two billion don’t have the use of a toilet.  They gathered a team of volunteers who were enthusiastic about doing something to alleviate poverty in East Africa and started BeyondWater.  12 years on they have been able to give over 100,000 people across East Africa sustainable solutions and a way out of poverty.

A great story and we were very fortunate to have Sharon present to us, being the last presentation of the year for her during her current visit to New Zealand.

Club Activities & Other Important Dates to Diary
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 21st - BREAKFAST MEETING, OUR AGM & GUEST SPEAKER PDG JENNIE HERRING:
Esteemed Treasurer / Secretary Alex Gatt will present annual accounts for RCSJ and will cover usual AGM business.  Then  IPP Allan Smith will present on his successful year (July 2018 - June 2019).  But wait, there's more...

Guest Speaker:  Jennie Herring, Rotary Foundation

Many members may not fully understand how the "Rotary Foundation" works and some of the projects involved.  It is not just Polio!!!.... it is many projects throughout both New Zealand and the world, including our own Onja project in Madagascar.  Jennie, as a past District Governor, brings many experiences of Rotary to us and this will be a great opportunity for learning and have our horizons lifted.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 28th, BREAKFAST MEETING
GUEST SPEAKER HARRY RAINU:

Harry is the WasteWise Coordinator for the Waste Solutions Unit / Infrastructure and Environmental Services of Auckland Council.  He is responsible for the education and development of programmes encouraging Aucklander's to manage Waste differently.

This difficult issue touches everyone.  It signals change to a smaller or greater degree for every household, but these are changes that we, as Aucklanders, can make together because we know for sure that they are for the good of the city and for all of us.  This plan is about reducing the waste we throw into the bin, and about recycling and reusing more.  We know that many of the resources we depend on, which we have often taken for granted, are becoming scarce.  Yet there is so much we can do to ensure that resources we previously regarded as of no use – such as food / green waste and industrial waste – are fully used, and reused, reducing what we send to landfills.  We want to aim high but also make sure we take people with us.  In particular, the vulnerable must be protected and supported – that is why any changes will be made carefully over a period of four years.  All the actions that this plan will eventually require of us, are ones we would expect of a country that brands itself as clean and green, and of a city that aspires to be the world’s most liveable.

St. Pius X AED
Earlier this year the Rotary Club of St. Johns donated and installed an AED at St PIus X School in Glen Innes.  This unit is, of course, available to the community at large and the good news is, since its installation it has never been used.  However, last week, the school moved in to stunning new premises located next door to the old school.  This required the AED and the security box to be relocated prior to demolition of the old school.

In Miles' absence, Gary K with Grandson Freddy, and Peter W stepped up to relocate and mount the unit on the new school.  Hopefully Miles will be satisfied with the job!!  Pictured below is the AED in the original position and now in the new location.  School Principle Paul Coakley, pictured with Gary and Freddy, remains very appreciative of St. Johns Rotary's support and he is looking forward to having conversations with Miles on his return in regards to school garden options.

Glendowie College Interact has had a busy 2019!
Glendowie College has a large and engaged group of students participating in Interact and many initiatives have been completed in 2019 under the leadership of the team of year 12 students.

Fundraising started with the Easter egg initiative.  Students at the college are encouraged to buy chocolate bunnies or eggs to send to their fellow students, friends, siblings or favourite teachers with a note attached.  These were all “delivered” to form classes on the last day of term one.

The student body really enjoys this initiative and this year we sold more than 1,000 items raising an amazing six hundred dollars for Starship Children's Hospital.

REVIEWS
"Hopkins and Pryce's finely tuned performances illuminate Benedict's shrewd intelligence and Francis's deep humanity". (Globe and Mail).
"What makes "The Two Popes" so delightful, other than the very funny script, is watching two seasoned actors play off each other for two hours. Both Hopkins and Pryce illustrate what the craft of acting is really about." (The Wrap).

FUNDRAISING
Net proceeds to End Polio Now www.endpolio.org and other Rotary programmes.
Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending polio.
Since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every US$1 Rotary commits to polio eradication 2-to-1, currently up to US$50 million per year. Rotary, with matching funds from the Gates Foundation, has contributed more than US$2 billion to end polio.
Since we started the fight against polio, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 percent and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine. There are fewer polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero. If polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed. Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished.
Join us in the fight to end polio and help us save lives and give a child a chance at a prosperous future.
